The main engine shield is drooping in front of the oil pain.
    • AFAIK, there aren't supposed to be any clips holding it up
    • My guess: as long as the oil change flap was still there, it probably provided some stiffness.... but is long gone.
This is the lowest underbody point on my car, giving it quite poor clearance.

Has anyone implemented a good workable solution?

My initial thought: install a stiff plastic (plexiglas?) bar above the shield, zip tied to the sheild in several places, thus holding it up.

There's GOT to be a better solution than that... I hope!

You seriously should win a prize for most amount of new posts for the same problem.... You know if you do a google search and type in "PriusChat underbody shield alternatives" you could read 20 years worth of people discussing the subject. It would be way more efficient. And then if you still needed to make a new post because you couldn't find an answer you could share links to all the posts you already read, which would make your post way more valuable for people who have this question in the future.

You have my 20-year-old brass automatic flippable oil change valve I've had three of those things for like 30 years now since about 84 for the sloppy piece of plastic just take a what is that a quarter inch piece of metal you channel and shoot two or three small sheet metal Phillips screws in it hold it right up won't even know it's there probably stay there for a good long time just a small imagine it's like quarter inch you channel right in the home Depot metal section just a little piece what four six eight inches long put it on the engine side with the you faced up. And then shoot the screws from the ground side.

There are numerous aftermarket underbody panels, yes, the whole cover, oil change door and all, for sale on Amazon for less than $100.

Sure, the plastic is probably not as thick and sturdy as the oem part. Also, you will have to remove the absorbent mat material from the oem cover and transfer it to the new one. You should probably also reinforce or replace the oil change door hinge while it is clean and not yet torn and beat up.

If it was my car, I'd also try to reinforce the cover with some thin aluminum strips or other material to make it more sturdy and less vibration prone.

(@PriusCamper LOL... have I really been posting about this droopy thing? I willingly admit, I have a finely tuned forgettory, so it's possible. Didn't show up in my previous search. That IS a good hint for others though: searching directly on this site often doesn't produce much, but doing the same search on Google can find what you're looking for :-D )

Yeah, I *could* change out the whole thing. Yet: how many of us have vehicles with the oil change flap gone? Seems that's incredibly common. Are THAT many of us driving around with droopy shields?

It's the metal/plastic reinforcement that I'm considering. Why bother with the cover...

A good search: site:priuschat.com "underbody" shield alternatives

Best solution I've found: I fixed the @#&% oil door! | PriusChat

Some thoughts/info on the shield, in the oil change link in my signature (on a phone turn it landscape to see signatures).

I know for the generation too some guy makes a whole aluminum cover that goes under the whole front of the engine can't imagine why I would want that I guess for some off-roading security possibly but yeah hysterical but then we don't have a door for an oil change in ours I don't think. Every generation 3 I've seen that pan is definitely drooping mine got ripped off and thrown in the trash and short order and the trays that are under my seat pans they were full of 40 lb of rocks each one of them so I was carrying around 80 lb of rocks and the plastic covers that cover the brake lines and the two lines going from the battery to the inverter so they got removed in short order and I can almost feel it and acceleration no kidding and we live on a dirt Rock road and driving up and down that road right briskly and getting the car sideways and doing whatever we want with it with all the plastics are moved under the car nothing ever scraped or happened ever worth discussing and I drove that car and high Grass out on fence lines all of that stuff never a problem matter of fact when the plastics were on it it would break off grass and stuff that would stick in the plastic seams for months unless you roll the car up on ramps and lie down and literally pull the stuff out with your hands with the plastics not there no grass gets broken trapped in the vehicle nothing nothing at all the plastics made this way more messy course the car is not supposed to be in the grass but mine is
