My roommate said that my brake light looked dim
Read some sources which indicate that the brake lights are LED style that are part of the housing? Is this correct? Need to replace the whole, housing in such a case unless you really want to work at it?
Assuming that I have to replace the whole housing, the link I found has 2004-2005 different than 2006-2009? Is that correct as well?

My 05 has replaceable bulbs. Just did one side. It is pretty easy to open the hatch, pop off the cover and have a look.

The taillight, side marker, turn signal/hazard, and back-up lights are replaceable bulbs. The stop, or brake, lights are LEDs built into the housing.

(The diagram is referring to the clever/artsy thing they did in 2004–5, where the 'extension' pieces below the stop light reflectors were black, so when the stop lights were off you'd be seeing reflected black where the stop lights were, which blended with the dark hatch lower glass. But I think for 2006–9 they did away with the black-extension trick so those units look silvery when the stop lights are off.)

You can carefully open the brake light compartment with a dremel or a heated blade. The LEDs will be easy to access, they can be replaced with other LEDs by soldering them to the plates. The difficulty is to reattach the cut off part of the plastic case. It will be necessary to ensure a certain tightness of that part so that water does not get into it.

At used and wrecked car dismantlers, you can find inexpensive taillights and avoid having to repair the brake light yourself.

I pulled the rear tail lights apart all the time I only use the 0405 I like the blacked out brake lights any 06 to 09 car I have the tail lights come off and going to the box and 045 go on every car in the parking lot is like that yes you can crack open the tail lights and pull the board out and pull the LED assembly out if that's your thing and if you work on electronics you might be able to get it to work again being as they're only like $48 these days I don't do much of that no they're not the original Stanley's but they're close enough for the tail lights I only use Stanley's for the front headlights factory originals no fax the tail lights literally doesn't matter

I can get a right assembly for about $59 on eBay and a left for $65. Seen both for something like $118.
Unless the LED assembly themselves is really cheap, likely best to replace the whole thing.
What is the LED lights I would need to get for reference though?

Right now I will likely pull them from my 2009 if I have to so that tariffs don't destroy me.

I wonder if you could get a pair of the non-blacked 06–09 ones Tom doesn't like out᠎ta the box he puts them in.

On the LED lights replacement I can't tell you about that I know you can take the board out the reflectors out the LED board itself I have it laying here I mean I can take pictures of it but I don't know how you'd fix it Chapman f would be the one to do that I would just take that whole assembly I don't know somebody here right now but and they would play with that with 12 volts in the board and blah blah blah I could probably even get them to put red and other color lights in the brake lights if I wanted so when I stepped on the brakes my whole mishmash of weirdness would happen wouldn't that be fun but looks pretty easy I mean I don't think all the LEDs are burned out so it's probably the circuit board that splits from the harness coming into the board and then the harness running up to the LEDs but what they cost for the whole tail light you'll pay an electronics guy $80 and you get a whole new light one for 65 and one for whatever you said so it's kind of tricky. But I'll run out this afternoon or in a little while and try to put my hands on too non-blacked out '06 to 09 tail light so should be a few here I only throw them out about every 2 years Ill have about 20.
