    Project farm tested an assortment of small handheld 12V battery testers:



    Unfortunately he didn't test the one I already own (Viking 58759, from Harbor Freight). Looking at the summary table at the end it seems the general rule is "spend at least $32 and the unit should be acceptable." There were only two "fails" in all the tests for all the units at or above that point, both for tests on a cold battery. (Which is pretty much irrelevant here in LA, but would matter in colder climates.)

    Prices are likely to be very unstable for a while as pretty much all of these devices come from China and tariffs are wandering all over the place, leading to shortages (there are very few container ships at Long Beach and Los Angeles now - way, way, way below normal), and/or price increases (from limited supply), or increased prices as the tariffs are passed through.
