This is a self-licking ice cream cone.
When vehicles start getting a little older and they start stopping and stop starting then people will probably 'invite' the OEMS to make the switch either default to the last setting or the 'feature' will go the way of 85-MPH speedometers and 55-MPH interstate speed limits.

I defeated this moronic in my 2020 GMC with a $15 wiring mod.
My 2023 truck is un-modded only because I have to dig into the console in order to accomplish the same thing.

doesn't most newer cars has a switch to turn the function OFF? Some newer trucks I was looking at, the salesman pointed that out.

You have to turn it off each time you start vehicle. Sounds easy...IMHO, not so easy

IMHO; it'll become routine after a while. If it really irks you that much; you can hard-wire a bypass like ETC(ss) or have the dealership use their scan tool to disable it. Easy-Peasy......

    Not so easy.

Dealers won't bypass, just as they will not bypass clutch safety switches or seat belt alarms. A $100 USD aftermarket bypass is available for most cars, but I have better uses for $$$.

*sigh* more angry mayonnaise noises from the fox-watchers.

Some manufacturers got it to work just fine. And then there's GM, who makes it feel like a penalty- they seem to do that for a fair number of the 'features' on their cars.

Priuses have been using A.S.S. for a quarter century - and the car was designed from the keel up with this in mind.
Since Toyota's power-split device uses a big honkin' motor-generator with a hundred pounds of battery to spin up the ICE - it's not even noticeable.
There's effectively zero-lag between the time that you mash down on the throttle and time that the squirrel starts running on the wheel.

    It's just Priuses being Priuses.

Normy people cars were NOT designed to be A.S.S. but they pretty much had to figure something out.
Some of them did fairly well - and truth be told, using the disable button isn't a hardship for most.
    -if you have one.
You can use $1 worth of hardware to make the switch default to the previous state - but the OEMs are "encouraged" (forced) not to do this.

    TIFWIW

My first "A.S.S." car (Auto Stop System) was a 2020 Terrain.
It didn't have a button, and the work-around was some kind of Jedi mind trick (putting the vehicle into manual shift mode, and selecting the tallest gear)..... IIRC.
My CFO was not amused by the system, even though the GM's A.S.S. is fairly smooth.
    HOWEVER (comma!!!!!!)
There's still a latency at stops - and it's enough to bug some people.
If you've ever talked on an older marine satellite set or you're one of those gamers who know what 'latency' is then you know how aggravating it can be.

AND that's when things work SMOOTHLY!!!!
My latest work car is another manager hand-me-down.
It's a 2020 Jeeplet (Compass) with A.S.S. - only the geniuses at Jeep (Chrysler) didn't quite hit their mark with this system.

When you stop at a light for as little as a quarter second the car goes into Biden mode.
Lights on but nothing else happening under the hood.

Then, if you take your foot off of the brake, a lot of things start happening at once - and not smoothly - especially if you get your foot over to the throttle before the starter gets finished telling the engine to wake up and (since the car has an teensy-weensy motor) NOW might be a good time to start spooling up the turbocharger.
The result is about as reassuring as looking at your 401(k).

The car has 40,000 miles on it and frankly I don't see this transmission staying in one piece much longer - and I have an on-board data logger!!!!
That means.....NO sudden launches or NO sudden stops or my boss gets a nasty-gram!!!!
I get a 'one beep warning' every time I leave an intersection with this car.

The GM's A.S.S. is only aggravating.
The Jeep version is completely horrible.
    -----------------------------------------------

    Truck/SUV owners:
I just figured out a work-around for my truck's A.S.S. that does not involve ripping the console apart and paying for a $100 dongle.
Since I have a trailer outlet, I can plug a $5 trailer lamp tester into the 4-pin plug above the round 7-pin that I use.
    upload_2025-5-17_8-31-43.png

The ECU senses the resistance of the LEDs in the tester and presumes that........there's a trailer back there and disables A.S.S..
The downside is that it also disables parking sensors and something to do with pedestrians but I don't have those systems.
AND......I'm pretty sure that with a little Dremel work it will fit under the weather cover.
IF you're not worried about the weather cover and you use a 4-wire trailer connection Amazon makes a pass-through version of this tester with a little cap for the 12vdc pin.

Many SUVs and even some cars are pre-wired for trailer lights - they just don't have the socket installed.
Check your manual before paying for an A.S.S. wipe for your car!

    You're welcome.

    For me....

I grew up hearing starting your car put more wear on the engine than driving X numbers of miles.

So...save a gallon of gas a year to have the engine wear out prematurely?

Prius? ICE came on very, very rarely at stops.

My current Subaru...the AUTOSTOP is extremely rough coming back to life. Not only myself. Other Subaru drivers complain also. If I was sure that no engine damage was being done I would be fine with it. But 0w-20 and AUTOSTOP?

So, looking at savings calulations it is about seven percent on average with auto stop. One thing I did not consider is wear on starter and battery. Now I know why Subaru has such a large starter battery in their auto stop vehicles.

... effing scoundrels, I have a confidence issue with the automaker oligopoly.

They don't build vehicles for us, anymore. That they must build vehicles to appease Wall Street analysts, compliant to insurance firms dictating exactly how they are to be manufactured, we wind up driving demilitarized tanks, with air conditioning and surveillance, to track our comings and goings.

Lightweight VW Beetles of yore scored nearly as adequate fuel consumption, as our contemporary hybrids. 18RC in my lightweight '73 Celica, I could nurse 35 mpg, like I do in my hybrid.

Circa 1973, Honda's lightweight CVCC was so efficient, it didn't need smog abatement equipment.

No more lightweight vehicles to be had, so much redundancy of sprung and reciprocating mass to put to locomotion, engine-makers pull start-stop, stop-start stunts, making their emissions quota.

Since the VW emission compliance scandal, I've lost all confidence in automaker integrity. If ever again I even consider buying another vehicle, don't think I'll ever buy, much beyond the 2007 model year, if that.

I'm intent, doing the maintenance, keeping what I've got.

Afternoons we often walk our dog a ways up an arterial drive. Since the "improvements" a few years back, it's throttled right down, right-turn lanes eliminated, left-turns accompanied by sidewalk "swells" that block anyone trying to get around the turner. Consequentially, from school let-out through rushhour, it's a parking lot, pretty much for a kilometer, back to the highway. As we're walking along the row of cars they'll periodically get going, and you can hear the concerted engine start-ups. especially late-model mercedes and bmw.

Good argument for at least sticking with hybrids?

Was true then. I sure wouldn't want to retrofit an autostart on an old car for that (and other) reasons.

Now that almost any engine routinely lasts 200k+ miles without major overhaul it's worth claiming some of those efficiency benefits.

These aren't cold starts. My Subaru won't even engage it until everything has warmed up. Then it will restart if the battery charge drops too low, or other reason, such as time off. The system coddles the car compared to when I manually shut down past cars.
I only find the starts rough when they happen while applying the brake. Getting rid of rough starts requires a 48V battery and a starter-generator.
The engine isn't off long enough for the oil to drain down, no matter the viscosity. The antiwear additives are there to protect on start ups.

I think Gerdes had to replace the starter on an Accord after three years with manual shut offs, but that was Wayne.

My father loved Car Talk. My mom hated it.

    I could take or leave.

As to the San Andreas Fault. For some reason, when started by the A.S.S. system on both my Subaru Outback and Crosstrek it actually shakes the vehicles a bit and is noisy.

Normal starts, not so much....which does not seem right.

Ray is probably correct about the boxer being somewhat responsible.

Normal starts don't have the car in gear.

Could also be a perception thing. You are expecting it when starting the car vs the car doing the starting. Possibly catching you by surprise by the restart.
Why not easy? Did Subaru hide the button on your trims? My Touring has the auto start/stop button in the HVAC section of the main screen, but doesn't have the autohold button by the gear shift like the lower trims. Would have to go into the settings menu after starting to turn it on.

Subaru is well known for lag time on their recent touch screens. The "button " may be there and you may push it. It may even go dark indicating all is well...well maybe.

Or you push it to turn off, but nothing happens so you push again. Only to turn it on.

You get into a circle of cussing and pushing. Maybe that turns it back on, maybe not.
Maddening. And not only for stop/start.

It does seem to sort out after a quarter-mile or so...SUBARU forums can educate you as it is a subject not unknown.

My $5 A.S.S. wipe method works - but I cannot trim it down enough to allow the spring covered weather cover to stay closed.

I'm thinking about a more permanent solution but for now the $5 fix is working and I have other fire-roasted irons.
