Hi just bought a 2008 Prius, the key works to start car but buttons (lock/unlock) doesn't work neither does proximity function work. the key case was damaged so I assumed key will be damaged so I had a brand new key programmed but it still doesn't work.

successfully added new key "transponder" car starts with both old and new key if inserting into key key slot.

tried to add smart key it failed because it did not accept signal from original key - so did smart box reset (16 minutes) after this via diagnostic tried to add key but still does not work - tried onboard programming and again does not work I get the ONE lock/unlock as an indication that car is in programming mode, when I am supposed to hold the lock and unlock button together this is not recognised (it should lock unlock once to accept key, or twice if key is not accepted) but it does not do anything at all.

the key button under the steering wheel is pushed OUT but I have tried in both position.
I have also replaced 12v battery and ensured good ground, I have even put on an extra charged 15v but still no difference.

this leads me to believe it is either a fuse that's causing issue (I found online SKS system uses same fuse as windows? windows work fine) or it could be wiring or the antenna / receiver?

any recommendation how to go about resolving this if I go to dealer they will replace EVERYTHING with a bill equivalent to maybe 3000-5000USD the car is not worth more than 2000usd lol

any tips or tricks on this please?

fob battery brand new led lights up and also tested with frequency tester and keys are definitely sending out signals at 434mhz (it is a European car.)

So the slot is an amplifier it also may be your antenna.? I have to refer to the manual right now to actually figure out if they're are other antenna or sensors for the remote I know there are some around the car too. I guess these things have to pick up your remote signal or transponder signal or something in order to make SKS and all that work with the key button under the steering wheel out SKS is enabled so proximity sensing should be working put your hand up to the door with the remote in your pocket the door unlocked tap the button all the rest .

I'm by chance just for hahas have you by chance just hooked up your scanner to read the codes to see if there are any storm codes related to security or body control or any of that. I think in the Toyota software you can look at your key situation and add new keys up to five or some kind of nonsense like that I'm not sure how you're adding here with the chicken dance and closing and opening the door and all that are?

This does not answer your question but might help someone else. My 2009 entered a mode where lock/unlock buttons worked as did in-slot starting but none of the automatic remote things did. I put up with it for years after hearing what Toyota of Kirkland was going to charge me just to look at it.
The cure was to lose a fob. When I bought a new fob and got it programmed everything began working like it used to.
Sheer speculation, but I guess the programming ritual put new secret crypto keys in all the fobs. There's apparently a different protocol for the push button features than for the pocket start and walk-up entry.

You need to buy a new key fob (with a silver logo on the back) and add it as if all keys were lost.

You can use a dealer for this, who will likely not accept you supplying a fob, or you could find a certified automotive locksmith to do the procedure. In any case, you need to have a seed key to do the all keys lost procedure.

I posted the link before to the new X-Force distributor or whatever they are they sell exact duplications of the factory fobs for $59 they're real not the fake ones that you see on Amazon and then they have a tool several of them the one I'm looking at or was looking at is 300 bucks but they make another one that's only like 80 and it is supposed to be able to make happen what we want to happen with programming a fob there's a bunch of information on the site about it and they have an 800 number I have not called them they sell an ex horse dongle that's only 60 bucks that looks exactly like the one that came with my Toyota toughbook and the tech software almost exactly and they claim it will work with tech no problem and I can send it back if it doesn't so you might want to look into this and avoid the $200 or $300 or whatever it is for the original old X-Force that people are pimping online there are also a couple of locksmiths that post in the comments of this company and I've talked to a few of them about what is going on here and apparently they're saying that this can be done and it's not all it's cracked up to be and so on so maybe there's a way now to reseed and all that without having to deal with Toyota directly if you will I would think this should be pretty easy or it should be by now and they're saying that it is I may just buy the $69 doodad and buy a fob from them and see what happens I can afford it I don't give a crap. And if it works then voila and if not I can send it back sounds good to me.

As mentioned, if you do not have one fully functional SKS fob then you have to follow an "all keys lost" scenario. This involves using an enhanced scantool with immobilizer functions to reset the immobilizer ecu via a "seed code".

This code is generated on a server based on an ID code from the ecu. Once that seed code is entered into the ecu, new fobs can be programmed. Most people go to a dealer or a capable automotive locksmith
