I have a 2007 Prius almost 200k miles(I've had since 2011). Last year I had the ABS pump (on the invoice they called it a ABS control unit) replaced and I got a used part (still $1300) because I had recently lost my job. A few weeks ago my check engine light came on - I took it for an oil change at an oil change place and when they gave me the car back the ABS lights were all on. The check engine light was the Mass Air Flow sensor. They said it was coming up that the ABS pump needed to be replaced again. This place specializes in asian cars and basically costs the same as a dealership so I am going to take it somewhere closer to me because I didn't love how they handled the brake situation both of these times. I literally started crying after they told me that - I had already spent almost $3k that I didn't really have on it almost a year ago. They also told me that I could just keep driving it without getting it fixed and that alot of people do that. It drove fine for a couple of weeks but this weekend I had to press down on the brake pretty hard to get it to stop which is super scary to me. I don't like the feeling of being scared every time I drive and I'm not in a place to get another car right this second either so I'm just going to take it somewhere else to see if it can be done cheap er than $3000. The current place wants $2000 just for the part. Is it possible the oil change place did something or was that just a coincidence? If the used parts are so unreliable for this - they should not even be offering it. They only warranty used parts for 90 days. Also does anyone have any recommendations for me here? Also I am located close to Washington DC if anyone in this group is also in the DMV. Thanks Everyone.
We don't need to know what they said it was coming up, we need to know what the actual trouble codes are. There are on the order of a couple hundred that can make those lights come on, and a lot of them have nothing to do with replacing that part. If you don't have the actual trouble codes from the shop, you can get them yourself with a good scan tool. No you personally will not be diy this now you may have a partner that is capable I don't know you. Wal Mart tools and s few things . But not going they're yet . Don't be scared Prius stops how long it takes is the thing now . Wash DC and MD burbs is pretty slow going we gotta house off Honeywell ln 20814. You've got some thinking to do .needs desires etc . What do you do use car for work ?
