It's one of the couple dozen computers in the car; it's responsible for controlling things like the lights, door locks, windows, defrost wires ... general "body" stuff. I think it is glommed onto the side of the main instrument panel junction block (driver's side under dash, also houses a bunch of fuses). -Chap
Hi Chap, If Main Body ECU is replaced, does it need to be reprogrammed with information from the old unit??? kind regards, Austre
Where are you located? What's the vin? the main body ECU (or Body Control Module - BCM) can store the vehicle's mileage information. Here's how it generally works: Odometer: The odometer, located on the instrument cluster, is the primary device that measures and displays the vehicle's mileage. ECU/BCM storage: While the odometer displays the mileage, the actual mileage data is stored electronically in various control units, including the ECU or BCM. Data transmission: The odometer receives mileage information, and this information is recorded and stored within the ECU or BCM, in most cases, and also in the odometer itself. Backup and verification: Storing mileage data in multiple locations within the vehicle's computer systems, like the ECU and BCM, helps to detect tampering. If the data in different modules doesn't match, it can raise a red flag. Important Notes: Replacing the instrument cluster: Changing the instrument cluster itself will generally not change the mileage because the mileage data is stored in the ECU/BCM. Odometer rollback: Tampering with a vehicle's mileage is illegal and is known as odometer rollback. Detecting discrepancies: Diagnostic tools used by mechanics can often detect inconsistencies in mileage data stored in different modules, revealing if the odometer has been tampered with.
