When a customer brings his parts it's oftentimes not what's needed and the customer box that we did the repair that was actually required not using their part. When we use their Chinese part and it doesn't work out we're then stumped as to whether or not the part which is brand new doesn't work at all or if the diagnosis was wrong. Essentially you're making a final diagnosis, providing an inferior Chinese part which may or may not work and may or may not cause other problems. And acting in a way which causes us to feel like when we find other things we're not going to be able to charge you for the work which we know needs to be done. You are the shrewd negotiator nobody wants to deal with and you provide parts that are inferior but hold us accountable for the outcome. Last time I did this it was wheel bearings on a Ford something or other car. It had knuckles. The customer complained about the labor time saying that in the YouTube video she watched it only took them 20 minutes. Your persona and your methodology is reminiscent of every bad encounter I've had with customers who provided their own parts. I can't even tell you the memories you have conjured up with your story. Other career mechanics here I'm sure share the same sentiment. You made the diagnosis you ordered the part. Go install it yourself. See how it works out. I want no part of that project

I will give you this much. . . . If I watch a YouTube video, I will assume it will take me at least two or three times as long. They often shorten certain parts. They often also don't show key areas that are hard to get to or hard to film. Watching a video usually though at least tells me if I can do a job.

That said, if a person buys Denso plugs at O'reilly. willing to show you the receipt, and just simply wants the new plugs put in, and you are unwilling to, that is business you lost. That is fine with me although at the end of the day it is also money you lost. Also, being that I can change out plugs in less than an hour, more than an hour for a 1st or 2nd gen Prius seems excessive. If I had need to get the O2 sensor replaced, I likely would have bought Denso at O'reilly, they seem better these days than Autozone. Main reason I would have wanted a shop to do it is because they have a lift and can get to it easier. What I would have a problem with is that many shops would get those same parts from the same source and then double the price or more. Those O2 sensors are already pricey. Maybe you have to for overhead purposes but that puts it out of what I want to or will be able to pay.

I am skilled in IT, more than cars, although like to think I am an okay backyard mechanic. Part time IT more than anything so not much profit currently. Someone asks me to put a new SSD in a laptop and they have the SSD, I will put it in. Now if it is a brand I have never heard of, I will tell them that it is sketchy. Similarly, you could go "I am not sure about these but if you get them at O'reilly or Autozone, I will put them in." I too have gotten sketchy parts online.

I actually learned both IT and backyard mechanic skills for the same reason, self defense. Been lied to both by mechanic shops and computer shops. Years ago, 1986 mustang with a carburetor. Went to a shop - claimed burned valves, wrong spark plugs, low compression, and about a half a dozen other problems. Said they put it on their computer. Went to an older man who was more of a backyard / traveling mechanic. Said that the carb just needed rebuilding. There were still places that did that and afterwards the car ran for many years afterwards. Still have it but needs a new carb or that one rebuilt again. My actual dream is to convert her to pure electric. That traveling mechanic would use parts you buy. Might be different with online parts but I can understand that. 2001 Mustang, AC went out. Went to a shop and they claimed the Freon levels were fine. Went to a backyard mechanic, tested it with a gauge and the shop lied. Added Freon and the AC worked fine.
