    Good folks of Priuslandia!

Vegemite finally needed a repair; after 425k km (~270k miles), driver side CV is clunk clunk clunking..

Check the 'tube...looks easy enough....axle nut off, three rusty bolts for control arm off, outer cv joint swinging in the breeze..

    Then!

Pry, yank, pull, heat, curse, tired, curse, pull, think...inner CV cup won't budge.

Dejected I looked at the 'tube again over a plate of lasagna; couple of methods:

    1) Cut the boot of the old joint, insert, vice grip in place, yank yank yank.
    2) CV puller forks
    3) Chisel

    What has worked for you?

    Thanks,

    Faz

    1) careful (but violent) use of the largest prybar that I get into position between the inner joint and transmission

    2) gentle (steady) use of a prybar by one person while a second uses a flat hammer attachment on an air chisel-hammer to "rattle" the side of the inner joint

Both of these methods are helped tremendously by having the car fully raised on a lift

Be mindful that your prying against a relatively soft aluminum case!!!

The transmission end needs to come out straight; so if you've separated it from the rest of the shaft that's a plus; otherwise you'll need a second person to take the "weight-off" the other end as you gently pry, reposition/rotate a bit and try prying again. It's held in by a spring clip, so repositioning and trying to pry again does help. If that spring clip is in an awkward position - no amount of prying is going to get it to release. That's why you want to take the pressure off of it, reposition and try again. It should pop right out once that clip compresses.

    Good Luck.......

There's a $19 tool on Amazon and other places that consists of what looks like a reg ball joint fork. Wider and another fork not tapered . Makes quick work of this trying to get two sized prys on they're sux. Not much room once one pry is in violent snap of wrist usually pops it . But many times not . they're no room on these vehicles. That fork makes it pretty painless .

You do have the other end out of hub ???? If not you need to figure out to make strut swing away from car . A person has to hold it away from car or pull it from hub. Rest shaft on frame not hanging . Some guys use the exhaust pipe holder to keep shaft level . If it's hanging out of car notice the extreme angle you prying that circlip at.
