Getting conflicting answers on google about how much oil is needed to do an oil change.

Wal Mart silver or gold oil it's eye level on shelf 18.99 here here's a good idea drain oil out remove filter cart. You bought 5qt bottle oil put in drain plug add 4 qts oil start car let idle a few seconds turn off wait a few seconds like 30 pull stick out wipe return and pull again add oil till hatch marks are covered it'll be 4 4 to 4.6 purdy much

 

Maybe I do it sometimes especially with the new to me vehicle might get done twice especially on a 3

 

But wen I used to pump gas . I used to kill it hustle 300 a day in the 80s hi value gasoline Corp look em up

 

Wen I worked at dealer I could change oil daily seriously .. I mean in my car ...nuts .

 

Funny story my first car a Corolla w 2tc hemi engine I drove almost 400K never changed oil . It'd get low id add every few . months id spin off the ph8a and screw on new one cat never died never it's still parked in a local junkyard the body fell apart .

 

When you change the oil and filter, you need 4.4 quarts of oil to refill it.

 

I don't want to seem a jerk, but you may be better off continuing to use the dealer for your oil changes. You're going to end up with a drain plug falling out or filter falling off.

 

0-20 full synthetic 4.4 quarts

 

Any 0w20 that bears the API "SN" rating or better (which is almost all of them) will be good enough. The costco and walmart house brands are fine. No need to fool around with special varieties advertised for "high mileage" etc.

I tend to find what we need for about $23 per 5qt jug, just for reference.

You must have researched right into the guy who posted that he filled his oil to 6 quarts and only drained the oil by removing the filter the last 4 oil changes!!!

 

Did your search include the Owner’s Manual?


When I'm changing oil and filter, with just the front raised, quite high, and let it drip well, I put in 4.2 liters, carefully measured with a graduated pitcher. Subsequent check, after a few days driving, I'll see oil level maybe 1/8" below the top mark.

When checking the dipstick, after pulling and wiping it off the first time, wait about 5 minutes, before reinserting for the check. The wait gives oil drawn up the guide tube time to drain down, so you get a clearer oil level reading.

Basically when they see an owners manual which has no crease marks on the binding they say "don't go by the book today boys! Drinks are on me after work!"

Seriously dealers I use don't charge by quarts of oil. Around here they charge $79 for an oil change with filter. Plus tax and ridiculous shop fees. Sometimes they offer a buy one get one free which is somewhat worth it if you don't like crawling around under a jacked up car.

 

My dealers do all the fluids, filter and an "inspection" for $79. Taxes and fees add $20. Tire rotations - free where I bought them but would be $20 extra at the dealer.

Same pricing without the quarts bs. The service advisors work on commission - so there is little left to figure out.

The fluids never need topping off, the multipoint inspections are a joke (just trying to sell wipers, alignments, brakes and air filters).

Dealer "maintenance" won't prevent head gaskets, brake boosters or hybrid batteries. Find a half price oil change option and do it every 5k miles. Change the engine coolant every 50k - one of the easiest jobs on the car. Same money - better chance at longer mileage.

 

I’d definitely talk to the service manager, don’t bother with the advisor. They owe you for all the times you’ve paid for an extra quart of oil. Before I bought my house I would take a 5 qt jug and my oil filter to my local mechanic and he would charge $30 for labor. I just got tired of the $120 oil change and wasting an entire Saturday for something so simple.
