Spark plug emergency

Yes I use mag sockets about ten yrs now . Usually a still round dowel like from home Depot it's metal 5 16 comes to mind you stick it down and you get it in between the plug rubber and the

 

Take it back and get the magnetic none

 

It’s good to tape the socket to the extension too: the internal rubber grip can be tenacious enough to leave the hole socket down the hole, which typically means you’ve got to back the plug out, to rectify.

I persevere with that style of socket, but I see a lot of mechanics use a plain socket, then fish plugs out with magnetic wand.

I believe 14mm is the proper size, but 9/16” is close. I’m using the latter.

Well, I bought them when they were on sale for $14 years ago. They are indeed expensive. I also have a larger magnetic pickup wand as a 2nd backup.

I also buy the spark plug socket that is magnetized. I guess it is recommended to check for any loose spark plug socket rings prior to starting the job.

 

I've left the socket down the hole, on the newly installed spark plug. Thought about if a few seconds, backed the plug back out, taped up the extension/socket joint, reinstalled the plug.

 

The trick with those rubber plugs, in the socket. Pull them out and glue them in. Silicon tub caulk works great, as long as the socket is clean and oil free.
When using them with spark plugs, a bit of dielectric grease on the plug and slide it into the socket ONE notch - you'll feel it. DO NOT press it down any further! Hand tighten and torque down without applying any downward pressure. They should pop out without incident.

FWIW; if you just put some dielectric grease on the plugs top tip, should reduce the chances of losing that stopper.

 

Just buy this magnetic socket and you'll forget about this problem.

For those that don’t have the magnetic socket. Just use a regular 14mm socket for the spark plug, then use a magnetic pick up tool to take the spark plugs out.
