You guys,,, have you ever heard of the expression, 'Once bit, Twice shy' ? And for another reference, when I had my head gasket replaced at a Gasket Master shop, he used, JUST the FelPro head gasket. Period. He reused all the other seals and gaskets.
Here's a pdf of @Carall's illustrated index pic in post #34: Maybe more portable, printable. Couple of missing bits, perhaps because they're readily apparent: the head gasket (not in the picture), and the unidentified large gasket, framing all the others, presumably the valve cover gasket?
What is the difference between the Fel-pro gasket and the original Toyota one? Just in its different color? It's made of steel with a coating that will also come off when its time comes. For me, the Gasket Masters is not an authority on this issue, at all. When I did my first head gasket job on my prius, I relied on other videos, bypassing the Gasket Masters video. The last time I did a head gasket job was sometime in 2011, on a Chevrolet Aveo. Regarding gaskets and o-rings. How stupid is it to be there and not replace all this, which has been there for many years and many miles? Reused used o-rings may not leak while it's warm outside, but there may be a surprise in the wintertime. I've dealt with it. But how would you know it's leaking when it's inside your engine?
I concur. The Toyota head gasket is an easy culprit, hey, it's what failed. But WHY it failed deserves attention. My hunch is "something" caused it to fail, and if not rectified in the repair, it'll cause the replacement (Toyota or FelPro) to fail, in short order. FWIW, Toyota has also revised the head gasket. Did you happen to take a pic of the one you got with the kit?
I found a photo of this kit and it is not quite suitable for working with a head gasket. It's missing the intake gasket for the EGR tube. Missing injector o-rings, but there are many some other rings. What is this triangle-shaped gasket in this kit for? I guess I'll stick to 04112-37254 kit.
The failing of the head gasket is needed to be discussed separately. I already have two of them (failed) and I have questions about them. This is the head gasket I installed in my prius, a 2012 prius v with 231k miles, from 04112-37254 kit This is the head gasket I installed in another prius, a 2013 prius v with almost 212k miles, from another 04112-37254 kit. This is the head gasket i removed from my prius, a 2012 prius v with 231k miles. I'm wondering what those numbers on top of the gasket mean? I searched online and found numbers that matched mine from the kit. There is also a number that starts from 8. I'll stop by the Toyota dealer one day and ask about the updated head gasket.
That looks like the updated one, per The Car Care Nut's video: Starts at the relevant point. I'm not that sure about his "reason" for the failure, but as you say, for another discussion. It'd be good to know the part no for the one in the video. I asked the question, in the comments. Does the gasket kit not disclose part numbers of the content? Frustrating.
According to the Toyota dealer website, the latest cylinder head gasket part number is 11115-37062. 11115-37062 - Head Gasket 2008-2022 Toyota | Longo Toyota Parts I'll talk to my local Toyota parts department. We'll see what they say. I'll check the package of the kit to see if there's any paper with part numbers in it.
