I'm planning on flying out of Seattle in a few weeks. I am going to find a place to store the car, offsite or at the airport. Seatac is notorious for auto theft. I want to do something that makes my car not start. Or better yet, so they can't open it with a computer scanner thing. If I park it, dig down and unhook my 12V battery, will that make it so it wont start? If so, will I have anything to worry about coming home 5 days later? Any other way to disable a car so no one can steal it? Thank you, ebm
I think so. Good ploy for battery preservation too. A jump pack in the cabin will help when you return: unlock with manual key, pop hood, connect jump pack, pop hatch. Otherwise you need to crawl through the car to pop the hatch from the emergency, inside release.
In Vancouver's main airport (YVR), parking alone is a nightmare. Just dropping off and picking up can be a gong show too. Any time family/friends are going out of town, someone else'll drive them out there and pick them up on their return. Often us, we've got the time and the car needs workouts. There's a Tim Hortons 2 minutes up the road that's integral to our strategy. Take transit? Up here, Skytrain is another option, as long as it's not way out of the way, and you're packed light. Don't get me started about less-than-optimum skytrain station locations, and the NIMBY'S...
If I wanted to disable my Gen 2, I would pop the hood, exit and lock the doors. Lift the hood and just remove the blue 15 amp AM2 fuse from the underhood fusebox. Car will no longer power up. Then, when I'm ready, pop the hood and put the fuse back in. Either way, just make sure your physical key functions properly so you can unlock the door to pop the hood again. I don't remember if the AM2 will kill the unlock function, but better safe than sorry.
