A few hybrid mechanics have told me that I have to replace the engine in my son's 2013 Prius V (230,000 miles). The estimates are $3,500 to $5,700. Is that a fair price in Los Angeles? Can you recommend a mechanic to do the job (or any mechanics to avoid)? Is it even worth replacing the engine (the body has a fair number of scrapes but is otherwise OK). Thanks.

Depends on source of replacement from ~$2.5k to $8k: used salvage, JDM used in Japan, basic rebuild without updated pistons and rings, rebuilt with updated pistons and rings or new short block rebuild. For low cost with lower lifetime, JDM. For more dollars but 100k reliability, rebuild with new pistons and rings.

But first I would consider if other major expenses have been repaired such as a $2.5k brake booster or. another $2.5k hybrid battery.
