    Hello :')

Today on the way to work I had my check engine light & Orange Triangle come on with the "Check Hybrid System" warning appear. I stopped and looked it up and said it was safe to finish the 5 minutes left on my drive to work. I live 15 minutes away from work and the light was still on on my way back home. About 12 minutes in and the power steering light came on and engine shut off. I panicked and since I was only 3 more minutes away from home I turned the car off and on again and it went back to how it was, about a minute later happened again so i turned off and on then successfully made it home.

I have a 2010 Prius Gen 3 with about 130K Miles on it. This car has been nothing but hell and problems for me and I don't know what to do. I am a college student and cant afford a incredibly expensive fix again. Is it safe to drive 10 minutes to my nearby Toyota dealership for them to look at it? I dont know what to do if it keeps shutting off and if it severely damages it every time. Any help or advice would be extremely appreciated!!!!

The dealership will connect a scanner to the car and check for trouble codes. If you do not have any warning lights on the dashboard when you take it to the dealership, they probably will not find and codes, and you will be charged ~$185 for the scan.

Tomorrow morning when the car is cold, try starting the car and see if you have any warning lights. If you do not have any warning lights, definitely do not take it to the dealership. If you do have warning lights, take it first to an auto parts store (Auto Zone, Advanced Auto, etc) for a free scan to check for the trouble codes and then post them here in this thread.

It sounds like you have had other problems with your car. Can you please describe what those were? The present problem may be related to the past problems.

Hey! thank you so much for your reply :) Started the card cold this morning - same lights as before (engine & check hybrid system with triangle). I got the obd2 reader and the codes I got were
    P261B - "manufacturer control"
    P0300 Random/multiple cylinder misfire detected
    P0302 Cylinder 2 misfire detected
    P0304 Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected
    and another P261B Manufacturer Control

Whats happened with my car in the past:
I bought the car in July 2022 and September 2022 the hybrid battery went out so my mechanic sent the battery to have all worn down cells replaced/fixed. The battery has been fine since and I've noticed no problems. At this same time I also had the 12 v replaced. Within a year of this happenening i began to have problems with the car rattling at the start as I've see others have called the "death rattle" and the codes for cylinder misfire. My mechanic who is the only prius specialist within an hour from me had tried everything. Checked head gasket, replaced spark plugs, cleaned the egr, washed out all the coolant, rerouted my ac/heat? or something like that. Everything. Its been so expensive and a huge headache. He decided to just let it be and told me to keep driving like normal until it breaks completely then itll show what it is. Well, its been about 2 years now and the rattling happens at start of vehicle sometimes but not all but other than that its been fine until this moment.

So with that being said seeing the cylinder misfire codes has been normal for me bit the manufacturer ones are new. Thank you so much again for all the help and advice. I dont have anyone I can ask about these problems so this is all very very helpful.

The description for code P261B is "Coolant Pump "B" Control Malfunction." This is for the engine water pump. This code is activated by the ECM (engine control module) when the water pump is rotating slower than 900 rpm when it should be rotating much faster than that. The water pump normally rotates at 2600 rpm or higher when the engine is running.

When this code is active and the engine coolant temperature goes higher than a certain temperature (I can't remember the exact temperature at this moment), the ECM will shut down the engine to protect it from overheating. The coolant temperature that this happens at is lower than the 248F, which turns on the high coolant temperature warning light on the dashboard. So, when this code is present, you have no indication why the engine shuts down, but it is happening to protect the engine from overheating. This is exactly like what you described in your original post.

In most cases, when you have the P261B code, the engine water pump needs to be replaced.

What is the level of the engine coolant in the plastic reservoir located near the right front wheel? If it is below the minimum level line on the reservoir, you should add coolant.

The Gen 3 engine has a history of head gasket problems happening from 150k to 210k miles. The engine cold start misfires (rattling) is the first indication of engine coolant leaking past the head gasket into cylinder #1 or #2. How has the engine coolant level been during the last two years? Have you needed to add coolant? Your mileage of 130k is lowered that when you normally see the head gasket failures. You can do a search on this Gen 3 forum for a huge amount of information about the failing head gasket in these engines.

Edit: As an experiment, when you are done driving your car for the day, open the hood of the car and slowly loosen the plastic cap on the engine coolant reservoir. Use a large rag so you do not burn yourself. The next morning, before you start the car, tighten the cap again. This should reduce the cold start misfires if the misfires are due to a failing head gasket.
