My Gen 2 has developed a howling noise which increases with speed. I recently had an exhaust leak fixed which reduced the noise level but didn't fix the problem entirely. I jacked up the rear and the left side especially has noise when spinning (sounds like bearings). Im definitely doing new bearings on the rear axle but should I also do front? Not sure whether there's noise up there yet. 245K miles now.
Take the drum off before doing the bearing. They can pack up with dust and it might make a dragging sound. Also if the drum is off and it still makes noise when the hub is turned then it probably is the bearing. There is no reason to change the fronts if they are not indicating any sort of problem. I wouldn't even change the other bearing in the back. However, if when the drum is off the shoes are found to be worn I would do the brakes on both sides at the same time.
