No issues with the car until after it sat for several months. I just replaced the 12v battery and received the "check hybrid battery" message/car didn't start. What things can I check myself prior to taking it to the dealer?

Purchase and use an OBD2 scanner to read the trouble codes. Take a look at this thread, Gen2 OBD2 app review | PriusChat
Read post #1 and then scroll down to post #37. You want to buy a scanner that can communicate with all the ECUs in the car. I recommend the Autel AP200 scanner. It is an OBD2 Bluetooth dongle, and you install an Autel app on your phone. The Autel AP200 costs about $60 on Amazon.

yeah you won't get far until somebody does a proper scan of the on-board diagnostics. The thread linked above has lots of great info.

That Autel is a very good unit, gives you access to all the same stuff the dealer can tell you except you own it forever at about 1/3 the price of a single dealer diagnostic visit.

    Good luck!

Unfortunantlly as the car sat the 12v battery went dead and there are no saved codes...

That's better than nothing, but that app can't do a comprehensive scan of a Prius.

    Good luck!

Car has the P0A0D code, so I narrowed it down to possiblly having a bad safety/service plug...

Can you recommend a good Autel or other brand hand held scanner?

Remove the orange safety interlock plug and reinstall it per the directions below.
There are three steps to install the orange safely plug.
    1. Insert the plug into the socket.
    2. Flip the lever of the plug.
    3. Slide the lever. This last step is something not completed, which will cause the code.
Here is a diagram from a Gen 2 Prius.

If that doesn't sort it, you can take that plug out again and examine it closely. You can look at what happens when that handle lever is slid sideways in the last step: a jumper connects two small pins that stick out at the side of the socket, completing the safety interlock circuit. Make sure those pins aren't bent, and they mate cleanly with that handle.

I can't, honestly. The AP200 and AP2500 smartphone-based ones work very well and they're quite inexpensive.

I know Autel does make some dedicated handheld devices which may have the same advanced diagnostic capabilities, but they cost so much more that most of us DIY types have focused on the smartphone-based ones instead.

I've noticed that Autel themselves have been gradually phasing out their handheld hardware in favor of a ruggedized Android tablet paired with a bluetooth dongle. From my point of view, you can save a fortune by getting the AP200 and using your own cheap tablet instead.

    Good luck!
