Sure, even Toyota Maintenance Channel broke the original Toyota tool due to previous overtighten. But he broke the fins… many have said those are not needed and only pull on those instead of the 14.

I almost broke the entire ”container” trying to get it loose initially with no correct tool. I managed to get friction with a big hose clamp tightened galore around it and vice grips right on that clamp to get that nightmare loosened.

The fins aide in cooling.... They're not just for looks...

Thought I would update my post now that the issue has been resolved. After purchasing the second oil filter removal wrench, it snapped even quicker than the first I owned...

I could have ordered and waited on a 3rd however as I had also ordered a replacement oil filter housing in-case the current gets damaged during removal, the return date on it would have expired (in the case I don't need it as wasn't that cheap to keep as a spare). Decided to go to my mechanic and get it done this time around.

He was able to remove it with 0 issues and it came off pretty easily (surprisingly). He used a Snap-on/Blue-Point branded one, looked and felt extremely durable, he also noted to use the filter removal tools with a socket over it rather than inserting it directly onto a socket wrench.

Visually it looked exactly like linked below, however his did have the fins on it for engagement as well, he did buy it several years ago so assuming this is an updated design if the picture is an accurate representation at all of the tool.

This is groundbreaking info. So the fin grooves on the oil filter removal tool is.. to cool the tool?

Even if I extrapolate your comment to the filter housing, tell me, how do they cool?

It’s obvious to me they are there to provide extra torque - but they engage before the 14 hence they are prone to break those - or the tool.

Aha! The very same tool I bought (Post 18) for about one-third the price, except without the expensive brand name on it.

    Groundbreaking info? Really???? oooookay....

It should be obvious to you the fins help to dissipate the heat.

How would it be obvious to you the fins are there to provide extra torque??? They are just there....

I only watched 2 of his videos, too creapy...... And they are sooooooooooooo long.
He could easily cut 90% of it and just get to the point.

@ASRDogman Please just source us valid science on this oh so obvious feature of cooling the filter. Without the rage.

Seems comically wrong. But this should be based on science. I would love to read actual information and not you opinion.

I have had my gen 3 for a year after owning several gen2 and I really like the oil filter setup on the Gen3 with the cartridge. I must be the odd man out. It screws off easily with the same tool that was used in the video above and drains relatively cleanly. I always use a torque wrench to put the cap back on.

I have not had an issue with breaking fins on the cap or having the cast aluminum wrench break either.

I did notice a few fins are gone, but I wouldn't be surprised if oil change places don't have the specialized tool. If it got worse, I would look for a used or new replacement. This setup is an improvement in my opinion.
