I bought this car in dead condition back in April. I finally got it running and all cleaned up. I was going to give to friends who need a car, but that plan hit the skids recently. The first thing that happened was that the alarm system seemed to go nuts, it went off at random times. I pulled the horns to cut down on the noise so the neighbors could sleep. I was planning to have the alarm system turned off by using the Toy Techstream application. Before I could get to that the flashing iights managed to kill the 12v battery. I put a charger on and got things back to operational status. That happened earlier this week.

The next thing that happened was that the lights in the speedo cluster went dark when I started it up on Nov 26. The backup camera also failed to trigger and appear with the dark cluster. Everything else seemed fine, the car ran fine for an errand. I have done the capacitor repair on the cluster before and I thought that had suddenly become necessary on this car. I drove the car with the dark cluster to complete an errand and I turned it off and hoped for the best. It seemed like a normal shutdown, the multifunction display turned off, etc. I started the car after the errand and it was the same as before, no speedo display, but everything else fine. When I got home, it would not shut off. The multi function display stayed on unless I switched it off, but the engine ran every minute or two, so it was obvious the car was in "Ready" mode and could be driven away. I disconnected the 12v battery and that made no difference. The car continued to start the engine every minute or two. I finally managed to turn the car off by holding the start button and the park button down at the same time for several seconds.

I figure that somehow the crazy alarm system and the inability to shut down are somehow related, but I don't have a clue where to start to fix that cluster of problems. Plus, I have the capacitor replacement job to do on the speedo cluster. Has anyone run in to something like this? Is there a chance that replacing the capacitor in the speedo cluster is going to fix all these problems? I am getting really tired of this car.

    Thanks for any ideas.

    Mike

I've been texting with my buddy Mike about this car... There doesn't seem to be much info on PriusChat about the horn alarm problems, but I did share the two links below with him, which lists lots of things to try:

    https://enginepatrol.com/toyota-prius-alarm-going-off

    https://knowmyauto.com/toyota-prius-alarm-keeps-going-off-how-to-fix-0051/

Also, Mike mentioned that he has already inspected and tested the alarm button on the key FOB and that's not the cause. Despite replacing the shell and the battery it doesn't have any effect on the problem.

Lastly, when you have the bad capacitor problem and car won't shut off keep trying to hold the power button down while pulling the FOB out of the slot, which usually resolves the problem.

I wonder what @ChapmanF thinks about this one? Not much history of it on PriusChat...
