The risks of software hackers are well known. So I'm happy to wait:
    • Tesla - no hacker loss reported
    • BMW - software has gone "End of Life" and updates no longer available
    • iPhone - still works
    • MacBook - still works, even the old ones
    • Linux - still works but changes a little to rapidly to be a stable platform
      • Using the MacOS for my linux needs

Same result, most of the time, when I crack open a laptop.

I have 4 tablets and phones sitting within 12 feet that all had start button failures and 7 hard disks I removed from PCs I recycled and have been meaning to destroy them for security reasons. Tax file and access codes to everything including investments. Dating to SCSI days. That doesn't count my sons portable and wife and my last gen PCs.

I really do need to do some cleanup.

Much now becomes obsolete when the maker no longer sponsors software/firmware/driver updates.

I like shiny new things and find my upgrades are driven by wants more than needs. Cars fall in the same category.

It takes a steady hand, 4x-6x dollar tree glasses, and fine tools.
I don't use a hair dryer to loosen the hot glue, use an electric flat top hot plate. You can control the temperature better, so you don't melt things.

What legal basis do insurance companies and banks have to steal or car-jack vehicles they don't own?

Banks own the car, if your financing it. There's also the question of ownership, if car companies can turn-off hardware on your car, if you don't pay the subscription fee - who really owns the car; if you don't have FULL control over it along with hardware already installed??????

If I remember old posts correctly, Bob's cars are not financed.

Neither are my household's vehicles. And while the subscription software / mobile app features were nice to use, I had little problem letting their trial periods lapse.

Tesla has offered to turn on features for a fee. Over seven years, the only one I've bought was Full Self Driving, $6,000 in 2019. The other offers are what my cell phone already offers and enabling rear seat heater (no kids.)

I've never had to address "send us money or we will turn off." Perhaps you are thinking of some example?

I buy my cars and put them on "liability only." Insurance costs for a financed car significantly increase the purchase cost.

Good to see you have a positive, young at heart outlook!

Like a millennial - no expectations for anything or anyone but without the social anxiety issues! Wait, isn't that the definition of the Me Generation boomer? Already cashed out, sitting on a pretty nest egg and waiting to die? LOL no monthly fees on your Tesla.
