I think I am not going to replace the engine with the 2006 Prius but instead possibly a third generation. Got started on doing it but stopped for a variety of reasons., Looking at a 2010 currently. If it falls through, looking back at getting another second gen

I have two wrecked second gen Prius in my yard right now. A 2006 with a blown motor, taken apart, and a 2009 with wrecked front end with probable frame damage.

What should I to try to salvage from each before I try to get rid of them. Also, is there anything, such as the battery, which is the same fro a 2010 or is it different? I suspect it is different but best to ask.

Edit: My roommate is driving a 2007 so there is reason to salvage stuff.

The rack of modules in the HV battery will from Gen 2 will go on a 3... All the normal parts that you have replaced you may want to save for a future use three way water valve inverter pump. Stuff like that .

The semi new inverter water pump was transferred to my roommate's car. I don't know how old the one on the 2006 is. I just replace the spark plugs and fuel injectors on the 2006 but not sure they they are worth recovering. Likely the 2010 would use the same ones though, at least spark plugs.
Should I snip the lines to the ABS module and store it in my shed?
    I am thinking
    1. HV Batteries, both
    2. Inverters
    3. Headlights if good.
    4. ABS module

I haven't bought it yet. What do I need to watch for as far as Gen 3 engines?

Gen3 engines are far worse than gen2 or any other Prius engine. Oil burning, head gaskets, blown engines along with brake boosters and inverters.

I would have put the 09 engine in the 06 but it may be too late now. Seriously consider gen4 or a Rav4 hybrid.

For lowest cost of ownership in an older used car, go conventional engine.

@rjparker You are driving a 2012 with 335,000 according to your signature. Is that a different engine?

This one is $3700 for 220 k miles

there are two, the second with upgraded pistons and rings. the change was made sometime in 2014.
the problems include oil burning, clogging egr circuits and blown head gaskets

If you have a gen3 with 5k oil changes since new and 50k coolant changes since new they can last longer than 150k-200k without major engine work. A used gen3 with 220k miles is a big risk just on miles alone, unknown history and there are ways to mask current head gasket issues. On top of that it is tough to ppi a gen3 hybrid accurately.

If the car looks great, everything works, you can diy major work and you are ok if you have to change the engine, then go for it and roll the dice.

Could I preemptively get the head gasket replaced or replace it myself? Would it help?
Can I preemptively simply replace the EGR valve?

Sounds like I should look at it and see what it is like. Suppose to be one owner.

I would not buy a gen3 for more than $1500 if I was going to rebuild the engine to eliminate risks in my ownership.

It is tough for a pro to ppi a gen3 hybrid accurately. Many fall for a well maintained gen3 body with flashy features and promises of faithfulness only to be disappointed down the road.

There is another car I have been looking at. This one is a 2006 with 200k. At least I know how to do many of the repairs with a Second Gen. This one is 3,000 (2,999). Going to look at it Tuesday and see if I can knock it (the price) down if it runs well. Any strange noises or codes, nope. Planning to bring my code reader.

Figure immediate oil change if I get it and keep doing oil changes every 5K miles.
