So why would any of us be necessary?

While I mostly agree... The innovation that will transform us the most via robots building robots will be the development of new materials we'll build stuff with, not actually what we're going to build. The nascent version of this currently is the use of AI to come up with new types of molecules that can be rapidly assembled. And I've no doubt that as our technology advances we'll eventually come full circle and realize that our DNA is the best systems to not just code and store data, but to define how living things can be grown to our exact specifications, which many have said is how most crashed UFOs appear to have been constructed.

None of this is going to happen/succeed without a significant universal basic income. With the way things are going in the US, we would be lucky to be alive.

There will be mass unemployment. If you don't feed people, there will be chaos. The government will have to act.

About 25 years ago, there was some innovation involving using DNA for building computers (see Leonard Adelman). Not much of substance has come of it.

But the rules would be entirely different for computers. DNA may be efficient in terms of carbon based life systems, but things that don't have carbon will have an entirely different set of rules and efficiencies. I've seen it postulated that carbon based beings were just a stepping stone on the path to evolution of silicon life. Of course, ultimately robots could engineer any carbon based life form they tasked to do. The question is why?
