I had a salvage yard pull a transmission out of a 2022 Prius with only 18k miles on it.

My 2021 20th anniversary edition (220k miles), the transmission is shot. Local shop used a borescope and showed metal shavings inside my transmission.

All the local "transmission" shops aren't very familiar with prius... only other option Toyota dealer (too expensive) where I live.

I'm too old these days and dont have a lift to do it myself.. so looking for suggestions for shops in either STL or Nashville.

I live in west ky and its about equal distance to either city. I can arrange flatbed transport, just not sure what would be a good shop to contact.

Your the first I've heard with a blown transmission in such a newer car. It may be worth it to take it to the dealership and pay for a diagnostic fee. This is a planetary gear transmission, so it's pretty bullet proof. Low ATF or a bearing going out would be the most likely defect. The flex plate between the transmission and motor is also known to crack/break - causing lots of noise when tranny spins the motor.
Some metal shavings is expected in there, but NOT metal chunks. Did you ever do an ATF change? How did the ATF look when it was drained?

I agree I've owned 4 second gen, 1 third gen, and 2 fourth gen.... literally close to a million miles and first I've had a trans problem.

Now for my confession.... I have a bad habit of never changing trans fluid at this point. Every prius I'd owned made it 250 to 300k miles never changed... basically, I've gotten too complacent.

I've also noticed that my current job I'm on a lot tighter time lines and been driving it harder than usual... 30 or 40 in and out of gear per day or more (driving doordash).

I've noticed (after trans problems and examining my driving habits) while driving my other 4th gen (2019 with 95k miles) that I'm hurrying the shift from reverse to drive or vise versa.... and possibly still have a little momentum when I shift (pulling out fast into heavy cross traffic a lot... hurrying to get moving before getting hit).

I also hit a LOT of potholes. My city is terrible on road repair.

As for the maintenance done both front wheel bearing hub assemblies. The passenger's side wheel bearings were the 1st to go. Replaced no problem. The drivers side was super seized and I tried slide hammer, air chisel, and finally some bolt on "smack it with a hammer" hub assembly removal tool I got off amazon.

Also a CV joint drivers side as well as both front rotors and brake pads within last 10k miles

Honestly I'd been hearing more and more noise from the drivers side (one that had most trouble removing bearings). After I replaced the bearings it sounded and felt TERRIBLE. So bad I thought maybe bearings were bad from factory and pulled and put another in (autozone didn't argue so it wasn't any extra cost).

It feels like the drivers side is grabbing as well as the noise.... I put the car up on a set of jack stands and took off the tires and just put lug nuts on the rotors to keep everything in place as a test.

Then I had my wife give it a little gas. The drivers side has a "stutter"... I should have taken a video of it. We did the experiment several times and it seemed to grab with zero load on the front end/suspension/brakes. The other side looked to rotate normally.

Once I had it back on the ground I took for a short slow drive and turning seemed to make it grab worse.

You can remove the half-shaft to isolate the transmission from the wheel bearing to find out what the real issue is. Push comes to shove, replace the entire assembly from a junker. If you press-in a bearing that isn't straight and flush; you'll introduce all kinds of issues and make your suspension work harder, because of all the wobbling. You'd probably notice reduced mpgs too. IMHO; The brakes should last more than 10K miles; something else is a problem. Have someone else knowable look at it, because sometimes we're too close to a problem - we miss something simple. Another pair of eyes could see something we've missed.
I would be changing that ATF every 100K miles; so it doesn't get a chance to sludge-up the internals. It's primary job is to cool the transmission, then provide lube. Tough to do if it doesn't flow properly. If you chipped a few gears; it would start whining and you'd have chunks on the bottom of your tranny.

    Good Luck.....

I live in Franklin TN about 18 miles south of Nashville. Just so you know, I have read a lot of BAD reviews about EuroFix on Royal Oaks Blvd. so I recommend staying away from them. I have used Toyota of Cool Springs for 50k and oil change/tire rotation with their online coupon and am satisfied with their service. Just decline all of their added service suggestions. All the dealers do it.
