I, like many of you I presume, love my Prius C and probably don't forsee getting a new car in the near feature.

As such, I want to invest in making my experience driving even better in whatever ways I can.

I did look into installing aftermarket safety features, but ultimately decided these modifications seemed too expensive and difficult.

Since then, I have been researching aftermarket stereos that can provide a convenient wireless android auto experience.
Currently, I use a phone holder lodged in my CD player (iOttie One Touch) for navigation which works okay but is definitely a hassle to set up every time I enter my car. I have driven cars that support android auto natively with their stereo system and vastly prefer that experience since it just works.

From a lot of time browsing Crutchfield's website, talking to one of their sales reps, and watching review videos for aftermarket stereos, I arrived at a few options I like.

My bare minimum requirements were as follows

    A. Supports Wireless Android Auto
    B. Not a floating screen (fits snug in the Prius C's double din opening)

I don't forsee myself using the stereo for much more than playing music + Google Maps at the same time and I am not an audiophile. As such, I am aiming for models on the cheaper end (<$500)

    Volume knobs

https://www.crutchfield.com/p_110CAR723C/Jensen-CAR723W-BC.html?tp=5684 ($270 and has backup camera)
    https://www.crutchfield.com/p_070DCPA723/Dual-DCPA723W.html?tp=5684 ($230)

The Jensen and Dual with volume knobs don't fill me with a ton of confidence since they look like the dropship models I see on Amazon, but I do really really like my current knob. The reviews I've see of these models also don't seem too spectacular on the connectivity and general reliability of these units. It just kind of sucks there's a lack of options with volume knobs on Crutchfield's website.

    Touchscreen buttons

    https://www.crutchfield.com/p_105KWM690B/JVC-KW-M690BW.html ($380)
    https://www.crutchfield.com/p_130DMW3000/Pioneer-DMH-W3000NEX.html?tp=5684 ($400)

The JVC is what one of the crutchfield reps tried to sell me on and it seems like a decent unit with a non-ugly UI. Don't know how I feel about touchscreen buttons though. Pioneer is another brand I've heard good things about and this unit was in a comfortable price range for me.

    Physical buttons

    https://www.crutchfield.com/p_158XAV6000/Sony-XAV-AX6000.html?tp=5684 ($448)

This Sony unit has a lot of reviews as well as physical buttons, more similar to my current head unit.

I was wondering if anyone had any personal experience with any of these stereo systems and how they worked out for you. If you have a suggestion for a different unit/brand I am all ears.

I am also curious if anyone has had experience installing a float screen stereo and if that posed any issues for adjusting temperature, blocking vents, etc.

The interior for my Prius C is pretty packed so I fear a floating screen unit would compromise my ability to touch other things.

I just bought a soundstream which used to be a really good company 7-in in- Apple Android maps etc from Amazon 180 or so . This is after soundstream had been sold off and some entity bought it just to use their name so I'm not expecting the soundstream quality if the mid 80 at all just functionality. Screen got good reviews and so on really all 8 care about this is going in a female customer car . Going in a Lexus es300 99. So no steer wheel buttons

I was looking at some of the tenant screens with the piece of plastic that covers up the old stereo and all of that nonsense but that stuff looks really cheap like it gonna break as soon as sun hits it . Tesla size wasn't in the game here .

I installed an earlier model from the Sony XAV line in our car. I bought it from Crutchfield and they were very helpful with the installation.

It is coming up on 8 years now, still works as well as the day I put it in. Having CarPlay/AA has been fantastic.

    Good luck!
