Tires *have* to be mentioned in any discussion of GEN5 MPG.

The LE model is going to do far better than the others with the chunkier wheels!

I got 56.7 mpg on my LE, actual, US, last tank with snow tires.
I'm hoping to get more after they get changed out.
Hopefully even more when I get the oil changed in 3000 miles to "certified" 0W8, lol.

I was a little disappointed yesterday, to discover that my VW Golf was getting better mileage than my Gen 5 Prius.

I loved my yellow 2000 TDI Beetle. Put 225k miles on it. Still looked and ran great when I sold it.

It's encouraging to know that both Toyota and Volkswagen have been the top auto producers in the world.
I don't think it's a coincidence that they were both committed to quality and longevity.

Unfortunately, the Prius Atkinson cycle engine is unable to employ a stratified ignition profile, which allows a lean mixture to detonate without damaging the engine. This is accomplished in the cylinder when direct fuel injection creates a small zone of rich mixture, which acts to cushion the shock of detonation of the leaner mixture.

I don't know enough about engine mechanics to know if it would be impossible, or whether stratified ignition has not yet been developed in the Atkinson cycle engine. I suspect it would have been done by Toyota engineers, were it possible.

I’m guessing those are imperial gallons which are quite a bit bigger than US gallons.
