Read up on performing a Piston Soak. I have a friend with almost 1 million miles on various Gen 2 and 3 Prii. He claims to get a big improvement on oil consumption after doing a week long piston soak. But this all depends on how you deal with the current situation. Installing a used engine is a roll of the dice. You already have a used engine. You could repair it. My Gen4 is doing great at 277k miles and doesn't seem to use much oil at all between 5-7k oil changes.
So even at OEM prices, a new sensor could be tried first, no?? But your right, that engine has a serious problem that may be too late for a piston soak. Don't listen to me. I'm bailing on my '10 w/ 179k miles on it. The head gasket was changed (FelPro) and it runs great. Does not consume oil. I get the weekly or so P420 for a while now. I'll replace the sensor before selling it. I'm bailing before the brake booster, or something else goes bad. The pack has always been healthy. And thanks to The Epstein War, I suspect Prius prices should be on the rise! Also I get, off hand, 5-7 mpg higher then the Gen3 driving the same with my '19 Eco. Plus, it's compatible with the Comma4! Big generational jump in tech!
I did not go that into detail with him about it but I would be more comfortable with the engine swap. He was also trying to sell me a 2012 Lexus CT 200 with 200k miles. Looked nice but that is the same engine as my 2011 prius so I would be taking a risk on that engine also.
I am going to pick it up today and see what the dealer will give me for a trade in. Its time to upgrade to the Sienna but man those new price tags are creeping into the mid 50ks... ouch! Anyone know of an aftermarket for gently used prius hybrid batteries. My new ones have less than 50k miles on them.
Well at 431,000 miles my 2010 Prius finally blew it's 2nd and last headgasket. I already bought a 2018 Prius Prime Advanced trim with 29,600 miles on it. It's fully loaded with all the safety features like Blind spot monitoring and pre collision avoidance and lane keeping assitance . I was hoping to see it make 500,000 miles but I refuse to dump any more money into it so its the end of the line now. Ironically the car still looks pretty good and a mechanically inclined person could still do a JDM engine swap but with an odometer at 431,000 miles the car is almost totally worthless because there would be very little resale value at that many miles.
Funny because Toyota's are supposed to be so reliable. I used to own a 2003 Hyundai Elantra and I put on 441,000 miles on the original engine and transmission and it was the most reliable car I ever owned. Unfortunately my 2010 Prius will go down as one of my least reliable cars. Andrew from Minnesota Hybrids said he doesn't recommend buying a Gen 3 Prius and I told him that I am on my second engine and that I hope to get 500,000 miles out of it and he said you might but the headgasket issue is very real and very few Gen 3 will make 300,000 thousand miles without a headgasket failure while the Gen 2 do it regularly. I dropped too much money on maintaining this car. I will be selling my 17 inch Prius 5 wheels and Michelin tires hopefully for at least $500 dollars to recoup some of my losses. I now realize that Gen 3 Prius won't last if you drive alot like me. They are ticking time bombs which will blow once they reach 150,000+ miles
Let it blow headgasket time. I am done with headgasket popping Gen 3 Prius cars. I just bought a low mileage Gen 4 Prius Prime. I even took great care of my Gen 3 Prius changed the oil every 5000 miles and it didn't burn a drop of oil yet it still blew a headgasket. I owned many high mileage cars ( 2003 Hyundai Elantra went 441,000 miles on the original engine and transmission ) and the only headgasket failures I ever had were with my Gen 3 Prius
