Was replacing a burnt-out low-beam bulb on the driver's side today and i noticed the plastic around the connectors are crusty, but not green (verdigris), and the metal is still shiny. The green plastic part is slightly burnt too, but this might be from the prior replacement when i could smell something burning. In the prior replacement, i don't recall the crusty mess being there. I think the connectors are serviceable, and i'll clean them with electrical contact cleaner. The replacement bulb (Sylvania H11 from autozone) works just fine, but this is the second replacement in 3 years, so I ordered OEM bulbs to install. The OEM bulbs are only an extra $3 / bulb. Has anyone experienced any similar white crusty buildup around the low-beam connectors?
Haven't seen that before. Poor low-beam longevity was a thing with some 2010s and 2011s, which delivered slightly excessive voltage at the low-beam bulbs, burning them out (if they were incandescent) extra quickly. There was a TSB announcing some wire harness extensions having about an extra half-volt drop so incandescent bulbs would last longer.
interesting, didn't know about that issue, thank you for linking the thread. in my case, the burning smell in the prior replacement lasted only a couple minutes - i installed the bulb without gloves, so it's plausible that my skin oils and sweat got onto the bulb as i wrangled it into place, and then the oils and sweat burnt off. in this most-recent replacement, i used powder-free latex gloves, and there's no burning smell.... yet..... upon further inspection in the burnt-out bulb, i noticed a broken piece of filament in the bulb too.
