Hi all, I'm wondering if those who have replaced the cylinder head with a new one from Toyota could share more about what's in the box. The part I'm referencing is 11101-39725 which looks like it's just the cast aluminum head and doesn't include any camshaft components, any valve components, and, potentially, no spark plug tubes. If tubes aren't included then what's their part number? The repair manual refers to the tubes as "spark plug tubes", but no parts show up on parts websites if you search with that as the keyword.
You've still got those low tension piston rings to deal with - so if your replacing it because of excessive oil burn. That's not going to help much.
Usually you move your cams over if there's no flat spots and everything looks good usually they pretty much do and spark tubes same channel lok pliers they come rt out if needed a bit of kroil .
not keen on reusing the spark tubes if the manual explicitly says not to reuse them. i'll continue my search
Never seen that in the manual thanks for the reference and I've reused spark to plug tubes in 2z 1 z and quite a few other Toyoda engines from late 70 forward 2tc had them or they may have been built into the valve cover actually on that engine but many Toyotas have had them they generally thread in I have not seen the not reuse statement . Ever. But I don't spend a lot of time reading either.
I've also lived in places that are so far away from civilization that pretty much there's no choice but to reuse by the time you get the new tubes you have been sent far away again .
Feeding that number in on Amayama, looks like the spark plug tubes, and a few other items, are included: LINK If you don't mind, what's the story on the car, miles, how long you've had it, why are you thinking to replace cylinder head? (Shipping cost to me, on west coast Canada, is shown as $30 CDN. That seems a little preposterous, suspect it'd end up being at least $100~200.
And this is a brand new head provided by Toyota or a remanufactured assembly also done by the Toyoda system?
Holy cow those illustrations on Amayama's website are 1000x better than those in the manual and toyota parts websites. No intent to replace the cylinder head yet. I'm estimating what it would cost to replace the engine with as new as parts as possible if (potentially when?) the head gasket goes. Current plan: Necessary: ~ $3,400 New short block New cylinder head New water pump New thermostat Engine gasket set Optional: ~ $750 New oil pump New Chain guide New Timing chain tensioner New Valves New valve seals Take note of condition of valve train during disassembly Chocking it up to good fortune that at 223,000 miles, i haven't had any classic symptoms. Piston heads black, no weeping coolant during compression test, no loss of coolant from reservoir, no harsh knocking sounds, just a mystery gravelly buzzing as described in my other thread
from what i can tell in the descriptions, the parts are new. The total cost is about 2-3x the cost of a used (ie junkyard) engine, and it still requires a fair amount of labor. But I have a good feeling it will last 2-3x longer than a junkyard engine especially now I know how to take care of it better.
Amayama only sells new AFAIK. Anything else, I'm sure they'd disclose it's condition. They sometimes have superseded, but nevertheless viable parts. My conversion to spin-on oil filter used a superseded part, works fine. @Alexikor what's the oil consumption like, considering you're also window shopping short-blocks? FWIW, the head you've got is more-n-likely fine, but who knows. Short block is more likely to be worth replacing, IF you've got runaway oil consumption and don't want to mess with piston/ring replacement. Not a bad ploy.
There was oil consumption earlier in its life between ~170,000-190,000 miles when it was following the 10,000-mile interval. Around 190,000 miles, I changed to a 5,000-mile interval, and I haven't noticed much if any loss in oil between oil changes. The day after an oil change, the dipstick measures halfway between the two dots. In the days leading up to an oil change, it's maybe a 1/3 to 2/5 above the lower dot. So I'm not sure if doubling the frequency of the oil change "fixed" the oil-burning, or if the engine could still burn oil, but because the oil is changed so frequently, the oil never degrades enough to be burned. Not going back to 10,000-mile interval to find out though.
That’s not significant oil consumption. Significant would be a quart every 1000 miles. Still not sure why you need a new cylinder head though. I’d wait till the heads off, test the valves for sealing.
