My wife bought a 2010 Toyota Prius - Gen III back in 2018-2019. It started with about 100K miles and she purchased it from a pre-owned Prius only dealer. Great guy from what I understand and will update this post with the business if we can remember the name. We're local to Pinellas County, FL. I believe his lot was in Tampa, FL.

Regardless, when she bought the car it ended up needing a new hybrid battery after about a year or two, she had that replaced and since then it has been great. I paid off her loan back in 2021 and took the Prius and bought her another car she had been wanting.

Up until about 4 months ago the Prius had been great. Regular oil changes, tune up, etc. Then the hybrid battery died again. Got it replaced on the cheap with a remanufactured battery from a local hybrid battery shop, they were also great.

After that the Prius began to have issues. It started as misfires on cylinder 1 on cold starts when the car sat for over the weekend.

I didn't think too much of it, maybe needed another tune up and waited it out for payday. Two weeks later it was to the point where it was misfiring after sitting overnight.

I replaced the spark plug and injector on cylinder 1 and swapped the coil pack from cylinder 2 to cylinder 1. It got better for a few days, then it started misfiring on cylinder 1 and 2 after only sitting for a few hours, on cold start.

I then went down the rabbit hole of checking the EGR and intake manifold, those were fine. I was stumped and was going to then see about a full tune up and possibly fuel additive in case it was relate to fuel contamination (and the pump and filter being in the gas tank, thanks Toyota).

I then took a trip to Tampa, so highway/interstate driving (I mostly drive city, I do idle my car a bit too much at work) to see if maybe some burning off of carbon due to higher speeds would help too.

After returning from trip back to city driving, it began misfiring anytime the engine turned on at traffic lights.

I did the full tune up, cleaned injectors, bought a PCV valve and a valve cover gasket, since a few plugs seemed a bit oily and at 212K miles, figured it wouldn't be a bad idea to replace it.

Saved PCV valve and valve cover gasket for the weekend, drove it to work the next day after tune up and it seemed fine. After it warmed up (5 minutes down the road) it started misfiring again once engine turned on.

Didn't drive it all day until I had to go home, started it up and it misfired like crazy, for a good 30 seconds. Noticed a good amount of white smoke, cleared up after about a minute. Let it run for a few minutes, turned it off and checked the coolant reservoir and it had consumed enough coolant to go from full to low.

I'm at the point where I don't think I have the skill or time to replace a head gasket and this car may be dead. I'd like to keep it and fix it, or have it fixed, but as a single income household with a wife, two kids, a dog, and two cats, I'm not able to pay $2,000-$4,000 out of pocket to have it serviced.

    TLDR:
2010 Toyota Prius - Gen III head gasket leaking, not enough skill or money to repair, replaced one injector on initial misfiring cylinder, all spark plugs, swapped coil packs, cleaned intake manifold and EGR, no fault codes other than misfire cylinder 1 and 2 and multi cylinder misfire code. Misfires worsened and car is burning coolant.

    Question:
Should I scrap it at a local junkyard, should I try and return it to hybrid battery shop, battery is warrantied for a year (it's been 4-5 months), to see if they want it for parts? Should I try and sell it as is on FB marketplace? Anyone here able to help with a head gasket repair, cheap machining shop, etc.?

I'm kind of at a loss, I'm currently driving my wife's car to work so she is left without a vehicle and my oldest will have to start taking the bus unless I finance another car (which won't be soon, as we were trying to pay off debt to build up credit for a potential home loan assistance program).

Any ideas? Help? Opinions? I've been on PriusChat a lot, just never had an account.

Failed headgasket in Gen3 is always between cylinder #1 and #2 so swapping those coils with each other isn't going to be as telling as putting coils from cylinder #3 and #4 into #1 and #2. So do that first to confirm. It'd be a huge relief if you just need a new set of ignition coils.

As for head gasket job, there's folks on here with far less skills than you who have successfully done the job and DIY headgasket job or hiring a friend or family to assist / do it is the most cost-effective option at this point.
