I'm learning how to and I'm getting better at apologizing for <strike>knee</strike>-jerk reactions! Wildkow p.s. Props to F8L for the idea and the inspiration for this topic.
LOL I find it interesting that in some ways we lose certain social skills if we spend too much time on the internet yet we gain others. When we say something in person it is easy to forget or later pretend you didn't say it quite like that. On the net everything is typed and SAVED so if you make an nice person out of yourself it is embedded in time and everyone can see it. I look at old posts on my racing forum from when I was 25 years old and I crack up at how much of an uneducated jerk I was. Thanks for the props Wildkow, as always we find common ground where one would think there is none. Cheers!

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Trevor @ Apr 12 2007, 12:06 AM) </div> Me too. Except on the rare occasion where the topic may hook me. Congrats, Wildkow, you've done it!
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(F8L @ Apr 11 2007, 11:51 PM) </div> I think you hit on something very valid - although people can differ in their ideologies - this is a venue where common ground can be reached - there is an advantage of having a continual and virtually perpetual conversation with someone - that time advantage that is offered here allows more time to search for commonality. David
No offense, but I'd like to think that in some small way I'm also responsible; I've urged us to avoid polarity and seek commonality for some time now. That said, I don't care who gets the credit, as long as it actually continues to happen.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Wildkow @ Apr 11 2007, 08:37 PM) </div> Don't go too far Wildkow or I'll turn into a Wildkow fan! It's starting already: I hereby retract and render inoperative any disparaging remarks I've made about you and your posts in the past (and apologize for having made them). And that's indelibly welded into cyberspace with a datestamp on it. Go Wildkow! Meanwhile, what have I learned? Not much. I know it all already anyway. (Wipes rotten tomato off face). OK, OK, I have learned, quite forcefully, that simply putting forth what I think is a 100% ironclad irrefutable argument is only about 2% of what it takes to be persuasive. It isn't the logic that separates us, it's the premises we start from, some of them so deep in our minds we don't even know they're there. If we seek and find common footing on our premises, rather than try to punch holes in logic (which, in and of itself, isn't as faulty as we think), I think we'd find ourselves more in agreement than we thought - and often upon new ground neither of us had thought of before. I have always liked your avatar reminds me of my little red biplane ultralight I used to fly. Sniff Sniff. . . it's gone but not forgotten. With the right cowl and a rounded rudder it looks a lot like a Beech Staggerwing. [attachmentid=7461]
one thing i've learned? behind the screen name, behind the words, there is always a real person. kow reminds us of this often, and i applaud him for it! it's too easy to get caught up in the depersonalization of the internet.
I've learned that even on the most emotional subjects, people on PriusChat by and large resist the urge to descend into personal attacks.

In FHOP I've learned, to my surprise, that F8L is 1 year older than me. I've also learned many little tidbits about many different subjects. Even when I completely disagree with someone, it's nice to learn a thing or two about a subject you feel strongly about. It only makes you counter arguments stronger if you can anticipate what someone will say!
