not sure if this is where I should be posting stuff like this... but...

I want to beable to use my laptop and plug it into the lighter outlet, I understand that the outlet does not work when the car is off.... I am wondering if the car is on (but not driving or in motion).. how long will the car stay on with the laptop pluged in charging before the gas engine kicks in.... for instance if the car is parked for 4 hours or so....

    thanks!

It will sit there in ACC on and DC outlets powered, without the ICE ever starting. Just go to that mode with your foot off the brake pedal. It will sit there in IGN-ON until the traction battery is depleted (many hours) if that mode is selected in the same manner.

Incorrect, ACC or IG-ON only drains the *12V* battery. The HV
battery isn't connected until you go to READY.

Yes. This is to keep the battery from going too low.

Well, Mr. Hobbit, you're a smart fellow, but you're Incorrect here.

IG-On will drain the HV Battery. Notice the HV Battery in displayed on the Energy screen in IG-On mode, and not ACC.
Note in IG-On you can run the climate control, window, headlights, etc. and it will drain the HV battery. The Hybrid system is not engaged, but the HV will be drained. Put your car in IG-On, turn on all that stuff and watch the HV Battery bars drop. I don't know how far it will be allowed to go, though. I believe the car will just power down before it is completely drained.

    9G-man,

I once put the PRIUS in Ready status to listen to the AM stations to hear the ballgame because I did not want to take the chance of running the 12 volt system down too low. I even turned off the display to save energy.

Did not think that just the radio would run the HV battery down fast, but in one hour I turned the PRIUS off because it was using way too much power for my purpose. It was a waste of energy, so I powered her down. I am sure that the ICE would have kicked in once I got to the purple 2 bars. It might have been because in READY mode the inverter is still activated even though NOT fully providing current to drive the wheels it still consumes energy. I am only guessing here.

When I use the AC during the summer to keep my 2 year old son cool while waiting outside, if the HV drops to the purple 2 bars, it is just a matter of a few more minutes and the ICE kicks in. The ICE only runs for a few minutes to charge the HV battery up a little.

    Bensinn, welcome to the forum!

You may want to consider a more efficient laptop setup. New ones can be found with 6-hour batteries that will recharge in under an hour, in some cases 20 minutes.

Coastal Tech has an easy mod to make one or both 12V outlets always-on.

You may also consider a larger-capacity accessory battery, particularly if you plan to work full 8+hour shifts in your powered-down car very often.

    Cheers,
    Bob

You're on target, whether it's just the inverter or all the electronics running behind the scene (the full extent of which I don't know). In Can-View I see current draw hover around 1 amp in READY with no user-controlled accessories running (e.g., lights, climate control, radio). Turning the radio on results in no noticeable increase.

Guys, there's no question the HV battery will be drained in READY mode, and the ICE will keep it charged. That's not being questioned. I had stated a while back that the HV battery would be drained in IG-ON mode. Posts were made that I was incorrect and the "HV Battery wasn't connected until in READY mode", and only the 12V battery would be drained.
We'll the HV battery will be drained in IG-ON mode, too, and I wonder what will happen if it's allowed to drain to, or past, purple bars.
