SYNTHETIC MOTOR OIL users : what brand , weight , etc. ?

    Please state : 1 .) what brand your currently using 2.) the weight of motor oil 3.) synthetic blend or full synthetic 4.) the benefits or adverse reaction to using an full / partial synthetic oil THANKS

    4. 100% synthetic is better if you are going to use longer drain intervals. If you are going to stick with Toyota's recommendation of 5,000 miles, the benefits of using a 100% synthetic oil are probably negligible.

    Ditto. What you gain by using Mobil 1 over other synthetics(Redline, Royal Purple, scamsoil) is you can obtain it anywhere oil is sold, the others are mail order. If you do a lot of driving, especially city, the Mobil 1 will give you the best protection over any blend of dino oil. Also the longer drain intervals are a plus, otherwise, like stated, it isnt worth the extra $ for it.

    Have used Trop Artic Synthetic blend since the first oil change
    5 w 30
    every 5 k miles

    have seemed to gain some mpg using this oil even

    and is priced at 1.68 a quart

    5W-30

    Full synthetic.

    I follow toyota's recommended oil change interval of 5000 miles or 6 months. I use the full synthetic because I bought a lot of it when it was on sale at Advance Auto for BOGOF. It was $2.89 per quart.
    If it were'nt for that I would use Havoline or Chevron 5W-30 dino juice. I really don't drive enough to warrant using synthetic at regular prices.

    I wanted synthetic becasue what I have heard is its better for your engine wear and tear wise and also it just makes the Prius 4quarts less dependant on fossil fuels. B)

    All of the above.

    And it won't ever form sludge in your engine.

    It gets to where it's needed sooner because it doesn't thicken as much in extreme cold, which helps with the wear and tear issue.

    From December to March Mobil 1 0W20 full synthetic.

    March thru November a mixture of Mobil 1 5W30 full synthetic and European Formula Castrol 0W30 (real) full synthetic.

    In the past I have used Mobil 1, 5W30 and 0W20. The latter (lower) viscosity is not 'approved' in Prius but the used oil analyses do not indicate wear problems. Current fill is Pennzoil Platinum 'for hybrids' 0W20. Its analysis is a long way off in the future...

    Only the lower-viscosity oils can improve mpg, and it may be 1 or 2 mpg for the average Prius driver. Synthetics in general can manage longer change intervals, and may give you (long term) less varnish building up on non-contact engine services.

    In the Prius:

    Mobil 1 0W-20 as a "winter" oil, which is suitable for our -40 winters. As a "summer" oil I'm running Mobil 1 0W-30

    In the FJ Cruiser:

    The factory oil indicated a *lot* of shear. A few reports from other FJ owners also report 5W-30 shearing quite a bit. So with a bit over 2,200 km on it, I changed the oil myself to Mobil 1 0W-40. For winter I'm unsure about the 0W-20, may run 0W-30.

    Just a note...I have driven over 120k miles on my Prius. Oil change every 15k and filter change every 7.5k. UOA shows TBN is well within range. I drive mostly freeway miles and carry 150-250lbs of gear and supplies, with a lifetime average of 45.4 MPG.

    Any synthetic will work well. Use the 5w-30 that Toyota dictates.

    If the area you live in experiences "real" wintertime temps of -30 C or colder, a synthetic 0W-30 would be far more appropriate. At normal operating temperature, and at the standard kinematic test run at +100 C, a 0W-30, 5W-30, and 10W-30 synthetic Mobil 1 all test very closely.

    Even at the extended HTHS test run at +150 C, the 0W-30, 5W-30, and 10W-30 Mobil 1's all test very close to each other.

    Back when Mobil used to publish MRV data for the Mobil 1 lineup, the 0W-30 tested at around 14,000 cP at -40 C. The 5W-30 tested at 16,000 cP at -35 C, and the 10W-30 tested 18,000 cP at -30 C.

    My used oil analysis of Mobil 1 0W-20 run over the last winter had very good values, no concerns at all.
