Hi folks, New owner of 06 Pri. Bought a second fob from nonToyota merchant and had the fob programmed by dealer. Dealer could program start function (but only if the fob is inserted into dash - doesn' t function as smart key) but said they couldn't program the lock/unlock remote function. Ever hear of that? Any ideas for making the smart key and lock functions work? Thanks.
Not all of the fobs are the same. The SKS is different than the non-SKS, and the older fobs are not compatible with the new ones. Tom
As Tom said, not all fobs are created equal. Fobs with silver logos (SKS) are different from fobs with black logos (non SKS).

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(IsrAmeriPrius @ Jul 26 2007, 06:26 PM) </div> 1. Is there a way to know for what year Pri the fob was made? 2. Would a fob made for the 04 or 05 work in the dash of an 06? The one I had programmed by the dealer does work if plugged into the dash - but it just doesn't function as a smart key or a remote for locking and unlocking, whihc of course I would like it too, especially since I paid almost $100 for it, plus the $50 for programming it. Thanks for any help. Gil
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Gil42 @ Jul 27 2007, 12:35 AM) </div> By the way, I would stay away from Original Keyless, the company that sold me the fob. Since the fob didn't work as promised, and it wouldn't pay for me to take a chance and get a return that I would have to spend $50 to reprogram without being sure that IT would work, I asked for half the cost back. Haven't heard back from them after two tries.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Gil42 @ Aug 7 2007, 11:25 PM) </div> Sorry to hear about your problem. I purchased a FOB(SKS) from my toyota dealer in Augusta. It has the silver toyota logo. The part number I purchased was toyota part number 89994-47061 The retail was $225 but he gave me the commercial rate of $159. He knew I would have to go back to him to have it programmed. I have a 05 pkg 5 (smart key). I hate to pay 159 plus 50-70 for programming but that is what it cost for technology. I think it also cost an additional 75-100 to have the hard key lazer cut. BTW I love the smart key functionality and I do not take it out of my pocket. Yeah!
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Gil42 @ Jul 26 2007, 09:35 PM) </div> Sorry. I did not see this post until today. There is a split of opinion whether that can be done. Take a look a the following threads: Can I sell an unused key fob? Old SmartKey & New Prius, Dealers claim unable to reprogram '05 fob for '07 Prius
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(D Rock @ Aug 7 2007, 11:36 PM) </div> Thanks for your reply. I wanted to avoid the large expense of buying from the dealer and mine was going to charge over $200.00 just for the fob. On the other hand, the dealer did order me a blank key and duplicated it for only $9. Why does it cost you 75-100 to cut the key?
Here is one fact I do know. If an SKS fob has been programmed to a Prius, it is done. The SKS fobs cannot be programmed more than one time. Our used car dept. had several fobs which were unidentifiable. They returned them to the parts dept. Problems arose when techs tried to progam them to cars. The immobiliser function would program. (Insert the fob and start the car.) The remote keyless, which is part of the SKS programming in the SKS models, would not program. Once a (Please pardon the term) "virgin" fob was used, the programming was successful. Non SKS fobs can be programmed to multiple vehicles AND the keyless function can also be programmed to mulitiple vehicles. The technology is the same as for the standard Toyota keyless entry remote. BTW the little manual key can be cut with a standard key machine, provided the operator is experianced and trained, due to the short length. Our parts dept. does not charge to cut these keys.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Bear68 @ Aug 8 2007, 10:40 AM) </div> If this is true, then what is a company like OriginalKeyless doing when it sells a customer an already used fob? And should'nt Ebay refuse to take auctions for a SmartKey that feature a used SKS fob? (Does this hold for all years that have SKS systems)?
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Gil42 @ Aug 8 2007, 01:39 PM) </div> Used fobs will work for non SKS. EBay may not be aware of this fact and yes, it does hold true for all years of SKS. We only discovered it through trial and error. Attempting to program a fob which had already been exposed to another vehicle.
