Check out FreeRice.com The best I could manage was 46, generally running about 42-44 (50 is max), after several runs that totaled about 2500 grains. Clever site and idea. I think direct donations to the Red Cross and other charities probably give more bang for each minute of the time you invest, but if you're gonna twiddle your thumbs waiting for something else to finish, this is about as constructive and engaging a twiddle as I've seen. That was fun and could get addicting! When I stopped, mine was at 43. Thanks for sharing. I'll probably be playing it at work now too.
I had like 2300 grains of rice and was at about 41 and had varied b/w 38 and 42 most of the time...seems like the words got easier the lower your score got and harder the higher it go...maybe my imagination though.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(efusco @ Nov 21 2007, 10:05 PM) </div> Not your imagination at all - the "score" is your "level" at any given moment, with 50 the maximum level. I was able to just touch 48 before dropping back to about 45; I can sustain about 44, although I'm still reasoning out what most of the words mean because 90% of them I rarely or never encounter, but there's enough in the root syllables or suffixes or prefixes to narrow it down to the correct definition. This sort of game is where 3 years of high school Latin finally pays off in recognizing roots. I'm at about 4000 grains over multiple sessions - you'd think at that quantity they'd throw in some shrimp or chicken now and then MB
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(airportkid @ Nov 22 2007, 05:39 AM) </div> No kidding. I was camped out on 45 for a while. It could have easily been 40 if I didn't speak Spanish. I was also helped out by an affinity for British Lit, too. Some of those words are way out there.
Man, my head hurts. It's too late at night for this. I got up to 41 but stopped at 320 grains of rice. How can you guys go for that long?
I hit 46, but at 45 I was just guessing, based on whether a word looked like it should be a verb or a noun, etc. Generally at 44 I was getting most of them right, but only once got enough 45s right to make it to 46. I was a bit shy of 400 grains when I got tired of it. How many grains of rice make a meal? I'm too lazy to count how many are in a cup.
I love playing Boggle on the computer, but this is even better and SO much easier. Yes, if you know Latin, you can generally use the prefixes, suffixes, and root words to figure out the meaning. I use to proof read, so this was right up my alley!
Okay, in 600 grains of rice, I made it to 42 consistently. I think I've found a new addiction. Thank you SO MUCH. *sigh*
