For California Prius owners only. California requires extended warranties (also called service contracts) to have an actual insurance company handle them in california. It's new legislation, set up to protect consumers from fly-by-night companies and this way, the CA insurance agency follows through, even if the company you buy from goes belly up. Problem is, no CA insurance companies have stepped up to the plate yet, as far as I can tell. That's the Rub. NO ONE is selling extended warranty policies any more in CA ! ! If you buy new, the dealer has you by the short & curlies if you want a CA extended warranty (only available from them if your car is under 36,000 miles, AND only then if you bought new, from them). So if you buy a used Prius, you can't buy extended contract warranties here now, unless the dealer handles the transaction, and you bought new! A co-worker with a Prius, bought used, with less than 24,000 miles. He told me he can't find an aftermarket company who'll sell to him. I called Warranty Direct. We bought our after market Prius warranty from them, bumper to bumper, in late 2006 ($960). They confirmed, that warranty companies have been axed out of the california market this way. Well fellow Prius owners? What to do, for the used Prius buyer, in CA ??
I don't remember Troy asked me if I was the 1st owner of my Prius when I bought ext warranty from him at 23K mile and 1 month before 3yr since new. Please check with Troy of WarrantyShack.com. As long as the vehicle is under 3yr and 36K miles, Troy should be able to sell you ext warranty and at a very fair price. I am located in CA.
Yikes! My co-worker tells me that after filling in the data, the next web page states they'll get back to him within the next two days ... that's not very encouraging. One would think they'd want to hussle a little faster ... at least until they take the money Follow up in 2 days, I guess.
