i have about 8.2k miles on my 2008 prius. i turn the car on and it starts blinkin on and off for like 5 seconds.... what is wrong with the car that makes the light come on? is the first time that ive seen it doing this. dealer changed oil about 3.5k miles ago. other than oil, i dont know what can cause the light to come on.
It is nothing more than an idiot light to remind you to change your oil. You can easily turn it off yourself. Turn the power switch IG-ON and make sure that the ODO/TRIP meter is displaying the odometer. Turn the power switch OFF. <LI class=bodytext>While pushing the ODO button, turn the power switch IG-ON. The reminder light will flash until the reset is completed. The reset is complete when the reminder light turns OFF. Release the ODO button. After the reset, the ODO/TRIP meter displays as a set of zeros for 1 second, then displays your normal odometer mileage.
You know, if they'd just call it a Maintenance Reminder instead of the "Required" that sounds so much more urgent I think it would eliminate a lot of confusion. But really, people should know the difference b/w Maintenance and repairs.
It starts flashing like that when it's been 4.5K miles since it was last reset. When it's been 5K miles since it was last reset, it will stay on steady. Your dealer should have reset it when they changed the oil, but there are many times when they forget. Darell's instructions will allow you to reset it on your own.
If you do reset the light now, remember to reset it again after you actually do maintenance so that it won't starting blinking until 4.5k miles after maintenance is actually done.
Uh... two things. 1. We aren't guessing here - this is the only reason the light comes on. 2. This isn't a problem. It is just a mileage counter. 3. (yes, this is a bonus!) you're welcome.
Actually it sounds like the dealer did reset it, considering the first oil change was done at 3.5K miles and it's now about 8K. But you're right, I've had to remind them sometimes to reset it.
