Hybrids can be cheaper in the long run, says BCAA

    Burnaby, British Columbia – The British Columbia Automobile Association (BCAA) has released the results of a study on the cost of hybrids versus comparable conventional models. Studying all thirteen hybrids available in B.C. over a five-year period, and factoring in fuel costs, the provincial Alternative Fuel Vehicle Tax Concession and the federal ecoAUTO Rebate Program, the analysis revealed that in seven of the 13 vehicle pairs analyzed, the hybrids turned out to be cheaper over five years overall.

    Better late than never I suppose :rolleyes:. Plus I can forward this to friends who would rather read news articles than make their decisions on what I say. (cause I might be bias :rolleyes:.. about saving money :confused:)

    Notice that they hybrids that they said cost less were the smaller hybrids, like Civic and Prius, but that they said not all hybrids cost less. (Probably the Tahoe hybrid - but we don't know since they didn't mention it)

    What is the "provincial Alternative Fuel Vehicle Tax Concession?"

    I was at the news stand earlier today and I notice that there there about 25 magazines dedicated to high performance and muscle cars, a few dedicated to all cars, but oddly I saw ZERO magazines for hybrids, and not even a cover photo on any magazine of a hybrid. Does anyone know if there are any print magazines dedicated to hybrids? Thank you.

    I actually read the article.... there seem to have some flaws
    1) they are comparing Matrix vs Prius (which the construction quality & Feature is like Night & Day).... Prius will have a much stronger re-sale value.

    2) Their study is using $1.4 /Litre as constant gas price. HELLO.... we already past $1.4/L since early-May and properly will reach $1.5 very soon.

    in conclusion Matrix vs Prius is a lost in money saving after 5yrs = loss $48 . I think they better re-work their math !!

    By not all hybrids, they mean the LS600h L. I'm sure you've read the news floating around the net about the LS600h L taking 98.8 years to recoup the premium :rolleyes:.

    The Alternative Fuel Vehicle Tax Concession is the full name of the "PST rebate" that we've talked about on PriusChat. It applies to hybrids and I believe NGV too.

    yeah but they can't do the Camry cause they already used the Camry HYbrid for it. I guess their thinking is that it can't be possible to compare the regular Camry to two hybrids :rolleyes:. The Matrix runs from $16k to $26k so.. which one did they use? The $16k one with no power windows?
