My wife suffered a spinal chord injury 5 years ago and as a result needs hand controls to operate a car. We equipped our Camery and now have done the same to our 2008 Prius. It costs $1200 and uses a single hand control to operate both the gas and brake. Pushing down operates the gas pedal and pushing forward operates the brake. It can be installed in one day and does require some minor modifications to the panel under the steering wheel. Also Toyota offers a $1000 rebate post installation. Brand: Monarch Mark IA
Very nice!!! I bet the Prius is great for storing her wheelchair in the hatchback area. Have you had to do any other mods in order to make it more user friendly for her?? BTW,, love your avatar pic
Bob Wible, Is the $1200 before or after the rebate? How did you come to learn about the Toyota rebate? Is there a site?
Hi Rokeby, sorry for not getting back to you earlier, I have been on vacation enjoying my new grandson. Here is the link to the Toyota website for the form. The rebate is for 1000 dollars after payment for the modification. So the modification will cost me 200 dollars. Toyota Mobility
It's too bad it has to be done with a mechanical connection. The Prius has so much drive-by-wire in it that it would be more elegant to use an electrical interface. You would still need some soft of mechanical backup on the brake system. I'm happy it works for your wife. How does she like driving your Prius? Tom
