In these morose times where hard-to-come-by credit and a financial crisis are having their way with the auto industry, revival will come from the development of a new type of heat engine. Over the next 20 or 30 years, this type of mill will no doubt still account for nearly 80% of the market. http://www.auto123.com/en/news/car-...-new-kind-of-conventional-engine?artid=105454
Very interesting! Combine variable compression with variable valve timing, and per-cylinder fuel monitoring and control, and you could expect V8 power out of 4 cylinder fuel economy Or, combine that into a 2 cylinder and get 4 cylinder power out of it
When I first clicked this thread, I thought the title was a thread about the latest in HTPC front-end w/ PVR capabilities.
Hi All, The MCE engine has had a detailed website up for some years. One of the big advantages of it is the linear crank connection, which minimizes friction forces between the piston and cylinder wall. Here is a link to that webpage, which includes an aninmation of the operating engine: MCE-5 VCR Engine . This more complicated design is probably enabled by the use of computerized mechanical design, and improved materials technology. Its hard to see a pre-computer engineer successfully being able to manufacture this with all the mechanical stack-up involved.
Compression is adjusted by varying the length of the stroke. This is fairly easy to do with a linear stroke. Tom
