First Drive: 2010 Toyota Prius puts up BIG numbers One thing of particular interest is the table at the very end with the "beat the chief" fuel economy challenge results. Those numbers are quite encouraging. It'll be interesting to see even non-hypermilers will be able to achieve.
That's an awesome statement right there. We have reporters smashing the EPA mileage and that other guy tried to get really bad mileage but couldn't. This is awesome.
Has anyone else noticed that several of these reviews talk about using the EV mode whenever they could to "save" gas and get better MPGs? Kinda goes against everything the hypermilers and Toyota have told us. Seems like Toyata didn't do a good job of explaining why EV mode is meant to be used sparingly.
Yeah, though most reviews I read mentioned that they tried to use EV mode for the last mile or so - that seems to be the only case where it would make sense to use it in a mileage competition - unless you found other situations where forcing EV was beneficial because you knew of upcoming road conditions that the car isn't able to predict.
Ignoring the top and bottom mpg results from the journalists, the eyeball average looks close to 70 mpg with a tight standard deviation. Wow Addendum: average is 69.86, SD 2.98. Normality not proven.
Would be interesting to know what the average speeds these G3 drivers obtained during their drives, as well as the length of the course they drove. I will agree the 70+ mpg figures are excellent, especially if they were not using hyper-miling techniques to achieve them. Pulse-and-glide driving, with average speeds in the 20 mph range are not real world driving conditions, in my opinion.
