Problem Removing Smart Key from Key Slot

    I just bought a 2009 Prius in late April and took it to a car wash last week. I normally just carry the smart key in my pocket, but I left the key in the key slot so the employees could drive it in and out of the automated wash. When I got in I was unable to remove the key from the key slot. It finally did release on its own, but I don't want a repeat of the problem. What did I do wrong?

    Did you power off the Prius before removing the key?

    Thanks for your quick response. Yes, that is when I could finally remove it. Is that the only way?
