Okay from my old days I have a Pointer 3000 (AF/AP) (ELT) Emergency Locator Transmitter with voice transmit capabilities. The tag says to replace battery "Mar 96" my friend gave it to me when I was getting ready to do a long cross country in my UltraLight. I think he said something about an update needed and certainly a battery. Is this unit still good to go and how much could I sell it for? Thanks :yo: Wildkow p.s. where's airportkid when I need him? :noidea:
What's the revision number?? Not enough information for me to answer the question. Try this site Pointer ELT 406 There are many revisions to the 3000 series.
Drop it from the second story after putting a new battery in and see if anybody shows up at your house.
LOL! You funny! I'm ascared to test the damn thing because I've heard of people just testing their's and having "Search and Rescue" show up at the door with a rather large invoice. Wildkow
If it's a 406MHz ELT, it's worth something, if it's 121.5Mhz, not really worth much as that frequency is no longer satellite monitored (or won't be really soon now).
Well, had this been FHOPol I'd have suggested you jump from the second floor while holding it! But when I was in Alaska I was in the Civil Air Patrol. A bunch of our activations would result in finding a perfectly sound pilot next to a perfectly sound plane who would begrudgingly admit to a "hard landing" and would crawl into the plane to shut off the ELT.
We were taught to switch the VHF voice radio to 121.5 after a hard landing, just to make sure the ELT wasn't activated. Tom
I don't remember being taught that, but it's obviously a good idea...and I'm quite sure I've forgotten MUCH that my instructor taught me since I haven't flown as PIC for a decade now.
Some instructors will drill it in, others don't. Fortunately in newer planes (i.e. Cessna 172SP, 182T, etc.), there's an indicator that should indicate when tripped on the right side of the panel.
You can test the new battery during the first 5 minutes of any hour. If you decide to sell it, I'll make you an offer. I dead serious!
