Toyota refuses to put in a VSC-off switch on the hybrids because they feel it is necessary to control the torque output of the electric to the drive wheels. I'm waiting for snow to see if driving the 2010 in one of the new drive modes might make a difference--thinking ECO might act like the "Winter" mode on a Volvo or Mercedes, reducing torque but allowing some spin. We'll see.
More precisely, they need to control the basic output to prevent transmission (or inverter) damage caused by parts spinning and then suddenly stopping (which in our case causes other parts to spin much faster).
Hi Bluemog, You are confusing VSC and Traction Control. They are not the same thing. VSC is usually not a cause of trasnmission damage, becasue it fires the rear brakes independantly, and there is no driveline connected to the rear wheels in a Prius.
That's an interesting notion. My Saab has a winter mode which I admit I have rarely needed to use - except when I am coming off a full stop and the road is slick or sloppy - Winter helps me accelerate with more control. I hadn't thought of using ECO that way. Any other opinions on that?
