Here are a couple of videos from my neck of the woods, taken on Beaver Island, in the north end of Lake Michigan. Perhaps they can help cool you down a bit: Ice breaking with a fish tug: Time lapse of the harbor freezing: Beaver Island Ice Classic - guess when the tower will go through the ice (major excitement): Tom
Tom and Jayman, You are probably right!! Only people with 4 seasons can appreciate those pics. They were really nice....thanks for doing that. We have 4 seasons here by the way.....oyster, crab, shrimp and crawfish. We actually had winter here last here....I think it was on a Tuesday!! Again thanks....
Great videos, Tom, especially breaking ice with the fish tug. As for Lake Michigan ice in open water outside of a bay, I wouldn't go out in anything smaller than a car ferry, but even those monsters have been known to get stuck in windrows. Back in the day when there was more than one railroad car ferry plying the Lake, they'd go across in pairs, making rescue easier in case one got stuck. Some boats did get stuck and stayed stuck for a month or so until the winds changed and eased the pressure on the ice pack. Thanks for reminding me why I live a bit farther south on Lake Michigan! Jim SS Badger, last of the traditional railroad car ferries (only carries autos and tourists now):
Nice photo of the Badger. I have stayed overnight on her, on my way across the lake. The staterooms are old and small, but it's still a fun trip. In better weather we cross the lake on our sailboat. Edit: I should add that the Master of the Badger is an old friend of mine. We played hockey together, and he served as backup goaltender if I couldn't play. Tom
