After many tries over the last few years, one finally got me tonight. I saw her on the passenger side of the road and started to slow. She made a really good feint to the front, which got me to lock the brakes, but then she cut back hard and ran into the side of the car. I won't know for sure until I look in the daylight, but it looks like the damage is limited to a few small scratches behind the windows on the passenger side, and a sprung plastic panel on the rear bumper. The panel snapped back into place with only a small amount of distortion. The scratches are small enough to touch up myself. What is it with these suicidal deer? Tom
We have a similar problem here with kangaroos. If you hit one of them full on they cause a lot of damage. The B Doubles hit them all the time on the outback roads. You will always see roadkill on the major highways and roads in australia.
Based on the ads that I've seen on TV, I think the deer like Subarus. Apparently they don't like the Prius, but I can't imagine why.
Glad that's all the damage there is. I had another near-miss on Tues. when a deer cut in front of me at highway speed (I was going about 45-50 on a 55mph road) and I missed hitting her/him with my right front bumper by about 2 feet.
I believe the deer escaped with nothing more than bruises and dirty underwear. She didn't even go down. I can't be sure, because they move so fast, but I think the scratches by the window were from a hind hoof. Their instinct is to jump over an obstruction. I think she thumped the side of the rear bumper and jumped. We were almost stopped at the time of impact. Alternately, it is possible that it wasn't a she but a button buck and the scratches were from small antlers, but I didn't see any indication of antlers. I watch carefully for deer around here, especially at twilight. I spotted this one in time, but it doesn't do any good if the deer decides to run into the side of your car. At least bear are more careful. I'd hate to hit one of them. Turkeys are common. They can make a surprising mess. Tom
Are "B Doubles" semi trucks with two trailers, or are they the road trains with a bunch of trailers? The name implies two. Tom
A B double is an articulated combination consisting of a prime mover (tractor in USA speak) a semi trailer superimposed over the back of the prime mover and a second trailer superimposed over the rear of the first trailer.
How do you do that with a Prius, or an FJ Cruiser for that matter? If you really nail the brakes, the tires will be chirping in time to the ABS pumping Otherwise, happy to hear your better half won't be collecting on your life insurance anytime soon. Hitting a deer usually ends badly Could have been worse for you. Could have been a large, slow, rather dumb cow
At one time, it was easy to spot a cabover prime mover in North America. They have all but disappeared from the roads
I didn't really lock them. It was a figure of speech. I hit them hard and got a good chirp; nothing more dramatic than that. This was on our main highway, which means a twisty two-lane road with a 55 mph speed limit. Given the time of day and the curves, I wasn't going over 45 when I spotted the deer. By the time the deer bolted I was probably only going 35. That's when I did the brake test. Tom
