I know my keyfob is lost somewhere in my house, but I can't find it. Since the Prius can sense that the key is nearby, I would think it wouldn't be too hard to come up with a little hand-held device that could ping the key and tell you it is somewhere in-range. It doesn't need to do the whole encrypted negotiation stuff the prius/keyfob probably do, but simply get it to ping-back. Then I could just walk around the house until it told me the key was nearby, then it shouldn't be too hard to find it at that point. I googled and didn't find anything like this, anybody know if this would be difficult to do?
If you pick up the Prius and carry it around the house, the dome light will light up when you are within a meter or so of the keyfob. Yes, this would be difficult to do.
The Prius itself uses a oscillator to produce a homing signal - the encyrption is taken care of in the multiplexer or antenna unit. One would be able to build such a device - but first is finding out what will emulate the factory oscillator setup.
