    WEB BROWSER (Free) Let the browser wars begin anew: This open-source program is streamlined, customizable, and just plain better. No wonder it has attracted millions of users in just a few months. Is it merely a coincidence that Microsoft finally plans to give the aging Internet Explorer the major overhaul it has needed for years?

    E-MAIL PROGRAM (Free) This client gives you useful features such as fast search capability and an RSS reader. It's great at blocking spam, too.
    I tested version 1.0 of Thunderbird (a 5.8MB download). After years of using Microsoft Outlook, the switch was like trading in a big, lumbering Buick for a Mustang GT.

    Complete agreement with PC World in this case.

    I now have Firefox running on my at-work Windows and Linux PCs, and on my Mac at home.

    Having the common (and excellent) Firefox UI, working the same on all three machines (and sharing the same Bookmarks file) works wonderfully.

    Also, it makes me realize how much of the time spent on ANY of these machines is dominated by web browsing. In some ways, Firefox has become the "common UI" I use on any computer.
