The car has to warm up before it will go into EV mode, so it's unlikely to happen in a one mile trip. If the battery is full enough, it might work...

You probably just missed the beep. I did for the first couple tanks because I had music on, and it only beeps once.
When you get to the last bar, the car will beep, and the bar will flash.
