Greetings, long story short, I had a issue with my fobs both would not open my door etc, I didn't think they could both be bad but they were and I bought a new 12 volt battery, the problem was both fob batteries were bad, no warning like the first time I replaced them, anyway no big deal the battery is 4 years old so now I have a new one. I'm wanting to use my still good old battery in my 72 Chevy C10, other then keeping it secure does anybody see any reason why I should not make good use of this battery? Thanks
It will probably work for awhile. Might be slightly less cold cranking amps than the truck calls for but it may not matter if the truck starts easy. An AGM has advantages including deeper voltage cycling and longer life than flooded lead acid. But AGMs can cost two or three times the price of an equivalent flooded lead acid. They don't like an extremely hot location. The Prius battery is a sealed AGM versus a conventional vented lead acid which has a slightly different charging algorithm but I think the AGM will take it. Some sources suggest an agm should have a slightly lower float voltage, 13.8v vs 14.4v but they take a higher charge voltage when needed. So if the truck is going to sit on a float charger make sure the charger is rated for agm. The real issue is the age of the Prius battery so it may not last as long as a new lead acid battery would.
A Prius battery has really thin JIS pencil posts, whereas most batteries have more substantial, SAE posts, so the connectors may not be able to be tightened enough to be secure. Your C-10 may have another odd battery, with side posts, so be even harder to adapt to work.
i'll be interested to read if it has enough power to crank it properly, and if the charging system meets arm requirements.
Thanks everybody for your Replies, I really appreciate it, the truck has been sitting for 9 years so I'm bringing it back slowly as for the most part I only have weekends to work on it, I know I can make it fit and connect with no problems, i will update when I do get it going and how it is working out. I think it will be a good battery to keep around the garage, I used the trucks old battery as more core. Thanks again everybody, much appreciated.
Looking up a 72 Chevy C10 battery, it is a Group 78 battery that has somewhere around 800 cold cranking amps. The Prius 12 volt battery is Group S46B24R and has 325 cold cranking amps. The terminals are different and the Prius battery probably will not have enough capacity to do the job.
Thanks for the information Mr. Doles, the connections are no problem, I'm thinking I will be just using the battery for getting the truck up and running with the rest of summer, the truck wont see much winter use but I will get the proper recycled battery for it before the winter and just keep this prius battery around for getting other old projects going, I have some older 6 cylinder engines that it should provide plenty of starting power for providing I keep it charged up.
