Hi all, I replaced the 12V battery on my 2011 about 8 months ago, bought a beefy $200 one. Two weeks ago a friend got sick in the car and I left the doors open for about 24 hours to let it air out and the battery drained. Today I jump-started it and drove it for about 45 minutes including about 25 minutes of freeway driving, but now the car won't turn on. Did I not drive it long enough? Is my (relatively new) battery hosed? What gives? Thanks in advance for any insight.
you won't be able to tell the problem without some testing or trial and error. to get the car to charge it up, you have to drive about 8 hours (or leave it on in a safe place.) or you can get a charger, or take it somewhere to be charged. what is it, and where did you buy it? then you'll have to check it daily with a volt meter, or just wait to see if it dies again. sometimes one full drain isn't critical and sometimes it is. at the very least, it shortens the life span. if its toast, you may be covered under warranty. all the best!
What else could of caused it? If it's not something else then... A brand new battery that can't handle the doors being open overnight is a defective battery. Get your money back! What brand of battery did you buy? Usually people who have problems with a brand new replacement battery made the mistake of buying Optima yellow top, the poorest quality battery on the market! They have zero quality control and actually once admitted on Priuschat to not testing and just recharging and reselling the defective batteries that are returned to them. Of course prepare for the PriusCat trolls to attack anyone who complains about their precious junk battery maker that sells a product that works great for them.
The Prius doesn't charge the 12V very fast, so it's likely that you didn't drive it long enough. I'd put it on a charger overnight. Make sure it's one for AGM batteries and that you don't exceed the amperage limit. My wife's 2007 manual says 3.5A or less. Gen 3 is probably the same.
Thank you everyone, I have ordered a battery charger and it won't be here until the weekend because of the holiday but I'll give it a whirl.
